Dziś w wielu miejscach zabrzmiało „Gaude, mater Polonia” 🎓 Z okazji nowego roku akademickiego polecam moją najnowszą rozmowę w TVN24+ o kulisach odnalezienia tego hymnu i innych znaleziskach. W koszyku mediewisty jest jeszcze trochę grzybków do przerobienia... 😉🍄 tvn24.pl/plus/podcast...

Zaginiony "hymn polski" odnaleziony. Gaude Mater z kartonu
W czerwcu do Polski powrócił nieznany zapis hymnu Gaude Mater Polonia. Pieśń napisana na cześć świętego Stanisława jest najstarszą polską pieśnią ojczyźnianą i była nawet kandydatką do zostania polski...

The eagle has landed! Recently, I attended in Warsaw the ceremony marking the return of "Gaude, mater Polonia" to Poland. This is one of the oldest testimonies of the legendary chant that shaped Polish history. With its return, the story that began with my discovery in Berlin has come full circle.

Poland recovers medieval hymn manuscript, royal ring from Germany
Poland has recovered from Germany a medieval hymn manuscript, a royal ring and prewar railway models.

Heading to Poznań? You should! Enjoy a concert inspired by the coronation of the first Polish kings. Proud to be a consultant for the oratorium—though the poster itself needs a quick review. It got our Romano-Germanic Pontifical debate backwards! 😉

The dust from Bolesław Chrobry’s coronation millennium has settled, but the next anniversary is coming. As usual, modern politics in Poland distorts this history: the Right claims it for "sovereignty," Liberals for "entering Europe," and the Left ignores it. Time to drop these lenses. 1/3

If you happen to be in Warsaw today or tomorrow and enjoy medieval Poland, Bavaria, manuscripts, liturgy, dynastic politics, or other highly practical matters — come to the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences for the conference “Between Bavaria and Poland…”

After ten years of scratching a living in flea-infested archives we’re finally going back to where we belong: "Frühmittelalterliche Studien"! This time with a study on the Polish coronation ritual in 1025. Look for its coming on the last light of the fifth day of 2027. At dusk, look to the West.

Cambridge 2026, chapter two — closed. Drank from the “fountain of life” in Trinity College (read: ☕), heard a brilliant talk on the Ordo Romanus I, and presented a system that might finally help us “read” thousands of neglected manuscripts. 📜🤖

Greetings from the Bodleian Library, Oxford, where you never know what you’ll find. Someone must have said: “I dare you to draw a piggy face in a manuscript full of sacred prayers.” And someone replied: “Challenge accepted.” 🐷📜

After Munich, Vienna, Berlin, & Cambridge — next stop: Oxford. Tomorrow I present a platform for medieval manuscripts: HTR + tools identifying what’s actually in the source (for now mainly liturgy). Maybe we’ll finally start “reading” EVERYTHING in manuscripts and be truly rational about it.

Historia mojego rodzinnego Raciąża ma ponad tysiąc lat — już w XI w. było o grodzie głośno w źródłach. O wojownikach, uciążliwym sąsiedztwie Prusów i kulcie św. Wojciecha opowiadam w audycji radiowej 🎙️📜 Jeśli ktoś woli słuchać niż wertować przypisy, zapraszam tutaj: 🎧 m.youtube.com/watch?v=x2t0...

Cambridge never disappoints! Spoke at St Catharine’s College about how violence became law. Topics ranged from a self-castrating beaver 🦫, to Bolesław the Brave, to why 1939 was not a “return” to 10th–11th c. political norms, contra Albert Brackmann. Great discussion!

Over 850 years ago, on these winter days, a crime was committed: Bishop Werner of Płock was murdered. In the narrative of the sources, he quickly became a martyr, while the instigator of the crime was said to have burned at the stake. What really happened near Raciąż in 1170? The answers are below.

INTERCEPTED! A medieval manuscript studied by our @liturgica-poloniae.bsky.social team (the article beneath) is returning to Poland 🇵🇱 — a confirmed WWII wartime loss. Proud that we were the first to inform the Ministry. Sometimes research doesn’t just explain history — it brings it back. 📜

Proofs, proofs, proofs… 🧾❄️ Poland is buried in snow, and so is my inbox. I’ve already been skiing, but the real slalom is now—between footnotes, commas & last-minute corrections. ⛷️📚 Hot start to the year: book launch ✔️ talk ✔️, and now: survive the editorial avalanche (without turning into a Yeti). 🥶

With this UV stick and this amazing Codex Egberti/Gertrudae in Cividale, I shall make a discovery — or not… following Sid. Anyway, greetings from Friuli!

📖✨ Medieval beauty in a 19th-century setting. The Missale (Czartoryski Library, Kraków) unites green brocade, gilded copper, and a 13th-century Limoges enamel plaque. A stunning dialogue between medieval craft and 19th-century revival. ✨

Last week in Kielce I joined a fascinating discussion on the coronation of Bolesław the Brave (1025) 🏰 — together with Prof. Krzysztof Bracha, Fr. Andrzej Kwaśniewski & Dr. Wiesława Rutkowska from the State Archives in Kielce 👏 And yes — I also got to work with the stunning Gradual of Wiślica! 📜🎶

Who can, should head to Płock 🇵🇱 — we’re celebrating 950 years of the Płock diocese! How do historians celebrate? With a conference, of course. My talk on the murder of Bishop Werner is already behind me. 🎤 A short recap is now available in podcast form here 👇

✨ Polish medieval liturgy goes global 🌍 After a year of discoveries, conferences in four countries on two continents & media outreach in the largest Polish and German news outlets, including Der Spiegel, DW, TVN24, and TV Republika, our research team met this weekend to plan what’s next.

📺 Prime time. Main evening news. Poland’s biggest channel. In a story that might stir unease, I had 60 seconds to share research on a newly discovered fragment of "Gaude, mater Polonia". 🎶 Even brief moments can bring medieval heritage to the spotlight!

ND Week in Warszawa! 🇵🇱 From medieval monarchs to manuscript treasures, it was a treat to guide John Sikorski & his students through Polish history. Prof. Calvin Bower lit it up with a stellar lecture on St Michael’s sequences—plus rich conversations on liturgy & archangels. 👑📖🔥

May 8: the end of the war, the feast of St. Stanislaus, yesterday’s visit of the German Chancellor to Warsaw, and my interview in "Spiegel. Geschichte", which weaves these threads into a whole no one could have anticipated. About the unexpected discovery, and a history that is still very much alive.

📜 Yesterday, I was back in Płock—home to the oldest surviving "ordo coronandi" from medieval Poland, a coronation rite found in the so-called Płock Pontifical. Likely, the manuscript was written for the Gniezno province around 1200. 👑

Dziś kolejny raz na nagraniu – znów o koronacji Chrobrego. Transmisja dokładnie w tysiąc lat po prawdopodobnym dniu namaszczenia, czyli 18 kwietnia. Tym razem o godzinie 19:00. Gdzie? W audycji „Eureka” na antenie Jedynki (Polskie Radio). Dziękuję Pani K. Kobyleckiej za rozmowę!

If I look scared, it’s because I had to speak to Polish MPs today about the significance of medieval history for contemporary society. It was the most challenging talk I’ve ever given. Academia and policymakers don’t often meet with mutual understanding—but this time, it looks like I survived.
