Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Latest B&W render, all done in camera in 3dsmax. Lighting this scene is a real challenge, trying to match the look of the shot with from the film with Leia. R2's dome becomes my light meter, giving me insights into the various light types and where they were placed. #starwars #r2d2 #wip 0102

Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 13/05/2026I used the mountains from the actual shot from the film for the backplate in my render tests to help with colour matching the desert sand and other elements more closely. It also gives me a better idea on the negative space in the piece to adjust framing. #wip #starwars #r2d2 081
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 11/05/2026WIP, updated the desert sand shader, and the lighting. The mountains are just place holder for reference for eventually painting in. Next up, maybe more detail in the tracks, and then onto actually painting the mountain range. #starwars #r2d2 150
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 11/05/2026Hehe thanks cuz, always wanted to do a version of this, def will have to one day :) 010

Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 08/03/2026Out for our morning walk and breakfast in the peaks district, and there is a crashed car on the side of the road that has been there now for several months, with each trip we see its more damaged, and this week someone has posted this sign on it 😛 032
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 29/01/2026Thank you :) its days, weeks, months of being totally obsessed with achieving a look and never quite being happy, render, tweak, render, tweak - repeat a thousand times :P 010
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 29/01/2026My OCD won, I decided to go with the Kenny Baker two legged version of R2 (as used in the scene). You can tell by his split skirt, where Kenny's legs would come through into the feet. #starwars #r2d2 #kennybaker #wip 2111
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 29/01/2026Was looking maybe at checking out Melania (at the nearest showing), but its looks packed, no way I am sharing a whole showing with one other person... :P #Melania #MelaniaFilm 030
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 28/01/2026Did a pass on the Service Corridor, fixed the door details, and lighting - matching the reference shot (below the render window) more closely. Re: the reference shot, you will see the anamorphic squeeze happening (E.g. round doors are not fully round). #StarWars #r2d2 #wip #scifi #Tantive 0112
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 18/12/2025Revisiting the 2 to 3 leg animation, still lots more little tweaks to do to get a proper feeling of weight in there and stuff. #r2d2 #starwars #insomnia youtu.be/x99qIHyp3goyoutu.beR2D2 - 2 leg to 3 leg animation testYouTube video by Paul Wiz Johnson 020

Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 29/10/2025Thanks, and me too, it has some great scenes, but overall a dud, such a shame. But, it lives in my nostalgia visits now so gets a rewatch at least once a year :P 010
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 29/10/2025Oooh it's nearly Halloween, so here is last years' piece, with a new one incoming :) #halloween #starwars #poltergeist 1248

Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 03/03/2025Who'd have thought making trash could be so much fun... genuinely. Anyhoo, I updated texture sets, and the shaders. Silent (smelly) corridor (sort of) WIP. 🙂 #starwars 030
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 21/02/2025Here is another Halloween piece I did. "Here's Artoooooo!" #starwars #r2d2 #TheShining #Halloween 0101
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 21/02/2025After I finished this and posted it, I thought of a "better" byline, "It will scare the Deathstar plans out of you!" which bugs me to this day that I did not think of it earlier :P 010
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 21/02/2025For those that don't know, I have a history of doing parody pieces involving R2 and his mate R5 :) Another one I did a while back #r2d2 #starwars #poltergeist 130
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 21/02/2025And I just realised I never posted the Halloween 2024 parody piece I did. So here you go, better late than never... ;) #R2D2 #Poltergeist #starwars 020
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 19/02/2025My obsession with all things corridors (particulary Sci fi ones) continues. Poltergeist III mirrored corridor I did for Halloween '24 (with R2 and his nemesis R5). #poltergeist #corridor 030

Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 30/12/2024"Silent Corridors", for this one it will be the aftermath of the Trash Compactor escape, with a dead Dianoga (creature) floating in the water with blaster burns, and out the door you will see the Death Star corridor they escape down. #starwars #wip 081
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 29/12/2024Playing around with an idea for a series of corridor shots, post action, or/and the quiet before. Entitled "Silent Corridors" this is a rough test shot of one of the ideas. #starwars #wip 2345
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 17/12/2024And here we go, the iterative tiny, all so tiny, and you cant notice any bloody changes changes, but its hours of tweaks from me. Still a photo mountains in the background, lining up test ready for a digital painted version that I will eventully get too! #starwars #r2d2 #wip 070
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 16/12/2024I comped in a photo of the mountain range, get an idea of framing and where I need to add details when painting them in the final piece. #starwars #r2d2 #wip 030
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 16/12/2024No plans to do a real world build, just CG versions of all my favourite droids. And loving seeing what you are doing, looking forward to seeing the two together! :) 010

Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 08/12/2024R2-Q2, you see a glimpsing shot of him in the Tantive as he passes camera, now there are details in there that suggest he is using an R5 type body, with the longer extended legs, but not enough to properly determine. Mine is a mix R2 and R5 body types (for now) #starwars #r2d2 :) 140
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 05/12/2024Oooh lovely, def can make use of that :) 120
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 04/12/2024New piece under way, blocking out the sand dunes in the distance, next up the mountain range (may opt to paint them in post). #starwars #r2d2 #wip 020
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 28/11/2024Moving onto R5, latest update. #starwars #r2d2 051
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 26/11/2024So I did a new version of R2-Q2 to go with R4-M9 🙂, Tantive buddies! 🙂 #starwars #r2d2 040
Paul 'WIZ' Johnson @paulwizjohnson.bsky.social · 23/11/2024More corrections to R4-M9, the ANH version uses R5-D4's body, and also his extended length legs and round skirt. I also updated his paint scheme to match more closely the ANH droid, light green body colour and what I assume is army green painted stripes. #starwars 070
