Waving it all away "from this point on, it's all just a dream" drives me nuts. I wouldnt even bother mentioning it, but it happens SO much, and i want to be hearing discussions that have the imagination to grapple with Lynch on the levels he operates. Which do exist, dont get me wrong.

Lynch can be very dreamlike, no doubt. But his stuff is never "all just a dream." The stuff in his work IS happening. But he considers there to be layers of reality beyond the one we normally see and interact on, and his stuff brings those things into direct play.

Lynch loves to play with supernatural beings, other dimensions, pocket dimensions, symbolic surrealism, and mostly, above all: multiple layers of reality. Crazy, heady stuff. But unable to wrestle with and wrap their head around this stuff, they brush it away "from here on, its all a dream."

Someone just reminded me of a phenomenal sci-fi/fantasy book you simply MUST read: This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. It's short and the prose is eloquent. Two women, Red and Blue, on opposite sides of a time war. I'm getting all mushy just thinking about it.

I have watched hobby groups i was part of suddenly become over run with nasty political posts, all the time, having nothing whatsoever to do with the subject for which i joined. So many cant resist joining in despite themselves. When moderators are lost, the nastiness takes root so very fast.

This social media experiment does not work like the fantasy of the robust, roman forum. I have seen that again and again. I notices that spaces like discord would be much stricter in moderation, and the servers that weren't went off the deep end quickly into lovecraftian abysses.

I’m not saying i make story outlines with this at the forefront of my brain, but mulling over l, i do look at this aspect. The dance between subversion and satisfaction can be such a key element of a good story. As are cursed, furry vibes, but we will save that lecture for church groups sundays.

Conversely, there is enormous joy in satisfying expectation. The rom-com “will they wont they” (they will), as well as the John Wick “you killa my blank, prepare to die” are predictable tropes that will never, ever die and are satisfying and comforting to watch play out, even for the thousanth time.

A story without surprises can be poor entertainment. We need good twists, characters who dont conform to stereotypical characteristics, or arcs that defy the usual trajectory. Trope subversion is important to creating an engaging narrative
