Post

Sir, When the Dunbar lifeboat launched on December 21, 1971 in a force 10 gale to help a young man who had been face down in the water for several minutes, its crew did not know and did not ask whether the person was black, white, Christian, Muslim or a refugee. He was simply a human being in trouble. In setting out to save me the RNLI honoured one of the most admirable philosophies in human history. The fact that their action granted me a wonderful life I would otherwise not have had is a minor point. The important point is that in dedicating itself to the saving of human life the crew members of the RNLI restored my faith in humanity. Greater love hath no person than to risk their life for someone they do not know. Greater hate hath no person than to accuse those who put their lives on the line for others of being traitors.

We wondered when this door was last opened on the underground at Paddington.
A green wooden door on the far side of the track of an underground station, set into the wall opposite the platform. There are 7 horizontal cables mainly going across the middle and bottom of the door. It's padlocked shut with what looks like a very old and rusty lock.

I'm reading a great book about Carl Linnaeus and Georges-Louis de Buffon. In it Linnaeus explained that it worked the other way around and that some rocks were made from sand that had aggregated together:-) It's such a good book, I highly recommend it.
This book is Every Living Thing: The Great and Deadly Race to Know All Life by Jason Roberts. It is a dual biography focusing on the 18th-century rivalry between scientists Carl Linnaeus and Georges-Louis de Buffon as they competed to catalogue Earth's species. The hardcover edition was published in April 2024 by Riverrun. The book was recognized as the winner of the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Biography

Today's listening. I went to town on the alt text.
John Grant, with a teaspoon spoon in his hand, sitting in cool café. In his other hand is a book. On the table is a wide coffee mug. Browns are the predominant colour in the photo; the table and walls are wooden, and he's wearing a dark brown suit with a light green tie.

He's bearded with short, but thick, slightly curly hair and looking at the camera on a not quite menacing, but almost, way.

I have to say this is one of the best albums ever made. And what a cover! Why's it so great? Immaculate musicianship, amazing singing, and above all, great songs. I love listening to the story each song tells, each a little snippet of history. I absolutely love it.

Here we see the Whirlpool galaxy M51 interacting with the dwarf galaxy NGC 5195. Note the stream of stars between the two.

Dear Secretary of State,

I am writing to express my support for Baroness Amos' investigation into maternity and neonatal services, and in particular to highlight the importance of miscarriage care as part of that work. With one in five pregnancies ending in miscarriage, the majority before 14 weeks. this is a matter of profound importance to hundreds of thousands of families across England each year.

Under the current NHS framework, women must endure three consecutive miscarriages before they qualify for specialist care and investigation. I recognise that there is growing evidence to suggest that earlier intervention may make a significant difference, both clinically and in terms of the support offered to those experiencing loss.

In that context, I welcome the findings expected from the pilot study of the Graded Model of Miscarriage Care at Tommy's Miscarriage Centre, Birmingham Women and Children's Hospital. The pilot offered care from the first miscarriage, with progressively more support following each subsequent loss. Researchers found a reduction in miscarriage rates among participants, and reported that even where miscarriage occurred, women received better care and support. Estimates suggest that wider adoption could prevent as many as 10,000 miscarriages a year. These are findings that merit serious consideration.

I am pleased that Ministers have indicated they will work with stakeholders to review the evidence and consider the implications carefully. I would encourage the Department to ensure that miscarriage care is given appropriate weight within Baroness Amos' investigation, and that the full range of options for better supporting those who experience pregnancy loss is thoroughly explored.

I hope the investigation will provide the foundations for a meaningful and evidence-led national conversation about how we can do more for those affected by miscarriage, and I look forward to seeing the recommendations that follow.

Alt text for visually impaired users:
And, most importantly, the Final Decision as a whole 'was vitiated by bias because the OfS approached the decision with a closed mind and had therefore unlawfully predetermined the decision'.

In this detailed and damning finding, the Court considered the conduct of the OfS and its key officers throughout the whole process of investigation. The Honourable Mrs Justice Lieven found that the OfS had operated with a 'closed mind'. It had intended from the outset to make an example of Sussex, to issue a strong sanction, and to secure a high level of publicity for its actions. This was not 'the basis for a fair investigative process'.
