(1/17) www.faz.net/aktuell/wirt...

“These militarized approaches undermine the cooperation, coordination & multilateralism essential to solving climate crisis ... diverting attention away, causing harm & undermining the strategies we actually need.” Lorah Steichen quoted in @thenation.com 👇 www.thenation.com/article/envi...

The US spends trillions not to prevent climate catastrophe but to crack down on climate refugees and prepare for climate conflicts.

While the US & Europe ramp up military spending, millions live in poverty. Today, we launch Transition Security Project, investigating how militarisation makes us poorer and less safe amid climate crisis — and what genuine security could look like. 🧵 transitionsecurity.org

It's October, and we have an event coming up! Pathways for environment research: academia, activism, policy. A conversation for ECRs about post-PhD research between 3 people who have taken different paths. 17th October, online & free, 1pm-2.30pm BST. Register here www.bisa.ac.uk/members/work...
Aimed at PhD and ECR researchers who are thinking about their future in environmental research, this roundtable brings together three researchers who have taken different pathways with their PhDs. Professor Rosaleen Duffy, Chair of International Politics at the University of Sheffield, will speak to her academic career as a researcher and teacher of global environmental change and governance. Dr Jane Clarke, Principal Analyst at the Office for Environmental Protection, will discuss her experience working on environmental policy across both non-government and government sectors. And Dr Kai Heron, Lecturer in Political Ecology at Lancaster University and co-director of the progressive policy platform Abundance, will share his experience as an activist researcher and using academia to further social movement goals.

The discussion will shed light on different ways to use your environment PhD, what different career pathways can offer, and opportunities for intersections between them. We hope you can join us!

1. This is a matter of geology not politics. The North Sea has been declining for decades, which is why the hundreds of licences the Tories issued in the last decade have produced a grand total of 16 days worth of gas. Most of what's left is oil, which brings us to the commercial reality which is...

Meanwhile, the live coverage of @zeit.de quotes Israeli plans of “relocation” (umquartiert). German news media on Israel/Palestine is deliberately delusional, complicit and shows that far from the much-praised “Vergangenheitsbewältigung” Germany hasn’t come very far at all.

NEW – Analysis: Clean energy just put China’s CO2 emissions into reverse for first time | @laurimyllyvirta.bsky.social Read here: buff.ly/6eAcjRU
Line chart – China's CO2 emissions are now 1% below their March 2024 peak: China’s emissions from fossil fuels and cement, million tonnes of CO2, rolling 12-month totals. Source: Emissions are estimated from National Bureau of Statistics data on production of different fuels and cement, China Customs data on imports and exports and WIND Information data on changes in inventories, applying emissions factors from China’s latest national greenhouse gas emissions inventory and annual emissions factors per tonne of cement production until 2024. Sector breakdown of coal consumption is estimated using coal consumption data from WIND Information and electricity data from the National Energy Administration.
