Searching for bivalve larval shells today in the scanning electron microscope. Here are a couple specimens that we collected on the continental shelf offshore Dauphin Island, Alabama. The first image is of Radiolucina amianta and the second is Nuculana acuta. #TinyWorlds #ScanningElectronMicroscopy

The Drexel press release (drexel.edu/news/archive...) talks about the research collections in terms that certainly make it sound like they're going to keep curating them and welcoming research. It's a university press release, of course, with expected levels of turd-polishing, but still.

From the article: public exhibits are closing. I don't know what the implications are for stewardship and access to the collections longer term.

Appalled that the Academy of Natural Sciences will be closing it's museum. ANSP's collections are invaluable for studying biodiversity & how it has changed over time & the museum provides people with opportunities to engage with STEM in fun & interesting ways. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/01/u...

Congratulations to Kanish Creary ('29) who presented her research @colgate.edu this week! Kanish is studying how bryozoans in the Gulf of Mexico are affected by climate change, specifically the impacts of changing temperature and acidity on the microstructure of their biomineralized colonies.

Arnold HS students in Panama City investigate how humans interacted with gulf coast environments over time by "adopting" a clam radiocarbon-dated for our research, studying what was happening when their clam was alive, & creating these stunning "Postcards from the Past" that share those histories.

"And even in a business-as-usual scenario that assumes no new climate policies, IEA projections suggest that renewables will overtake coal, gas and oil to become the largest source of energy on the planet by 2050. By that point, however, the world will have sailed well past 2 ºC of warming."

"One way or another, however, energy experts say that there’s a certain inevitability to the clean-energy transition because of market forces... the cost of clean-energy technologies has plummeted, and renewables are now the cheapest form of energy in many places." www.nature.com/immersive/d4...

Ocean acidity has increased by ~30% over pre-Industrial levels due to the uptake of anthropogenic CO2. Pteropods, “sea butterflies,” are planktonic snails that are sensitive to these changes. Scientists have found that their shells are getting thinner & are dissolving, especially at high latitudes.
