There are major account take-over problems happening right now on mastodon instances - all appearances are that the actor is using stolen passwords, probably from malware running on desktops. I've suspended hundreds of compromised accounts over the past 48 hours, but only two on mine. If you […]

There is a large-scale impersonation attack happening on Mastodon. People are registering typos of real people on mastodon.social and then following people who the real people follow. I’ve gotten two different ones today.

Anthropic is bragging about rolling their own from-scratch in-house version control system because git couldn't keep up with their 30,000 commits per day, and it doesn't seem to occur to them for a nanosecond that they are not fixing the actual problem in their engineering practices but making […]

Reading Chaucer's treatise on the astrolabe last night, I was reminded of the wonderful old English word "mileway." It means "the time it takes to travel a mile on foot," and in the astrology of Chaucer's day it meant exactly 20 minutes, a third of an hour. The OED labels it "obsolete," but I'd […]

@bagder Sorry, I worded that wrong. You charge them correct money for the "how to do full version upgrades faster" training; that will cost them a lot less money over time because they aren't patching old versions and then getting to new versions anyway.
