Polanski is still stuck in student politics mode. The Government isn’t “going after pensioners”. Burnham just announced the best possible outcome for older people: a care system that doesn’t strip pensioners of everything they have. Oh yes, and also took State pension out of taxation.

The BBC's online explainer of the Greater Manchester by-election describes the area as the "ceremonial county". Wrong. It's the former Metropolitan County established 1972 Local Government Act, abolished 1986 by Thatcher, recreated as as a Combined Authority in 2011.

Islington Council steps-in to safeguard adventure playgrounds
Islington Council has confirmed that 4 adventure playgrounds at risk of closure will now be managed directly by the Council without any break in services. These are Crumbles Castle (Bingfield Park in Cally), Lumpy Hill (Market Road), Martin Luther King (at Paradise Park) and Timbuktu (on Grenville Road, N19). The adventure playground staff teams' jobs will all be protected in the transfer to the Council's management. See Islington Council's statement here. The Council has also offered alternative nursery places to all the families that are affected by the closure of Paradise Park nursery.

In Islington, the Green Party has found a few wedge issues to try peel off previously Labour voters. But their policies according to quite a short manifesto are really just “we want to run things”, good vibes and continuity Labour. They’ve targeted Labour voters so maybe this isn’t surprising.

I have always approved of local government elections being in thirds or halves. In previous times, it provided continuity and stability. Nowadays it does the opposite. Finely balanced Councils see control switch from one party group to another with each election. Better to have 4 year certainty.
