Went to storage early on #RandomGameSaturday and found these little bits of anime history while rooting around for my Neo Geo AC Adapter

Two of the Hirameki AnimePlay games, Tea Society of a Witch and Hourglass of Summer. For the unaware, these were a series of All-ages Visual Novels localized by Hirameki international in the early 2000s that were made to be played on a standard DVD player. Because of the way they're made I've found they can kind of be a crapshoot to get working on things that aren't a standard DVD player of the era, and also you're limited to password saves at checkpoints (usually the end of an in-game day.) kinda wish there was some weird retroarch core that could play ISO dumps of these with savestates. I know it's not "technically" correct but I think referring to anime that has the same "vibe" as a tokusatsu show (so like SSSS.Gridman, Loser Ranger, even stuff like Yatterman and Gachaman) as also "tokusatsu" or "toku-adjacent" is too useful not to do. also watch (live-action) toku it's good

I just wanna say there's a pretty good amount of decent Isekai out, like I know it's been ~13 years there better be but honestly I think it has the same hit ratio as anything else now. And seeing takes that use it as a shorthand for slop just feels mired in the 2010s

Ok re-watching Ultraman Arc and I really appreciate that the recap episodes have a framing device and take the time to do a little world building and explain bits of lore (like I always assumed that his big beam attack was just a Spacium beam but it's got its own name) shows should do this more.

This #RandomGameSaturday pick was something I bought a couple days ago, but trust me the purchasing of it was very random! Saturn/PSX raising sim Wizard's Harmony 2 from Arc System Works. Can't stop thinking about this cover.

About me: Anime grid (with some explanation)
Favorite Anime: Ghost in the Shell (1995) self explanatory, kinda boring actually but it's probably my most "official" answer lol.

Best Story: Kowloon Generic Romance. Just, like I dunno what I was expecting going in but there's just so much going on in this story I can't fully explain. Excellent meditation on nostalgia, regret, moving on, and letting go. Weird as fuck ending that is exactly what I watch anime for.

Favorite Art Style: Hakumei and Mikochi. Ok I could list a dozen things for this but I wanted to pick something not "stereotypically anime" or "weird and artsy" and I definitely wanted to shout out some Iyashikei in this so here's a good spot.

Biggest Personal Impact: Boys Be. OK not like people usually mean, I got deep into this show years before it got a US release and it kinda rewired my brain

Best Fight Scenes: Gunslinger Girl. Look, it's a very cinematic show inspired by mafia films about cyber newtype orphans doing antiterrorism wetwork for the Italian government. There are *gonna* be good fights.

Overhated: Appleseed (2003) people have sorta come around some on this but it's also a standin for all 3dCG anime that aren't Studio Orange

Underrated: Victory Gundam. Turn-A fans should really see this as a rough draft for that.

Overrated: Demon Slayer. I actually like it a lot this is just about all the times I've been sent clips of underwhelming fights from it.

Has aged well: Gatchaman Crowds. *Sigh* unfortunately, if you've seen it you know it's aged *too* well.

Criminally Overlooked: The Fire Hunter. I'm gonna compare it to From The New World. It's not exactly that but it's the part of my brain it lives in.

So for context, the game borrows a lot of gameplay elements from Namco's "Tales of" series, including basics of the battle system, skits, and titles. Traits are roughly equivalent to titles where they're gained via story events, skits, and even out of chests sometimes, but here they tie into this whole "resonance" system. Basically certain traits when assigned to characters and put in arrangements where lines can be drawn between them on a chart will cause (usually helpful but not always) effects to happen semi-randomly during fights. The frequency of these will depend on inter-character bond, which I haven't totally deciphered because this game isn't exactly transparent about its systems sometimes

Yes the joke here is that I've been playing the same game pretty much exclusively for the last month and a half. And yes I started by saying it's very mid but I am enjoying it, like it does manage to be occasionally charming and funny, and like the gameplay is kind of OK even if it's mostly mindlessly mashing circle until you run into an enemy that can hitscan you from across the field for half your health and also confuse you (lose control of your character who may then go attack allies sometimes,) which can make an otherwise easy fight very annoying. RPGs be like that sometimes though. Can't recommend it unless you're already so deep into the genre you're running out of really amazing ones and thus probably don't need me to recommend stuff, but if you are somehow an RPG die-hard and turning your nose up at it because it's a 6/10 well don't.

4 games that defined my 2025 This is pretty similar to what I did last year and plan to do next year lol. I wanted to put in a game I didn't even play as a joke like FGO (since quitting it let me play these big RPGs) or Gnosia or Needy Girl Overdose, but nah.

This isn't my screenshot because the PS5 version of the game effectively bans all sharing/ streaming and I didn't want to put my off-TV pics. Anyway I spent nearly 400 hours, only finished one playthrough, didn't get platinum (because that requires a second run) and will probably go back whenever I can after the rest of the DLC is out. I really love this series but I kinda hate how I can't really talk about it with anybody who isn't an online person who's also a big mecha/SRW fan because if you haven't played it or aren't familiar with the properties you would have literally no idea (but weirdly you don't really need to know the shows to enjoy the game, it will sell you on any shows you don't know)

Adol and Karja on the deck of the Sandras in Ys X: Nordics with the Pikkard cosmetics equipped so the deck has grass and there are balloons on the back and the cannons are pikkards. Had a great time here and this game (Along with Metaphor I guess) really cemented my decision to lock TF in and play a single giant game until I was done this year

I'm not gonna say I *never* do, but oversized LE packaging that doesn't fit on the same shelf as my 600 other Blu-rays is really annoying, and as physical media goes increasingly niche/boutique you see too many cases where the LE is the only release or a standard release comes months later.

I can't be the only one who sees this. Right? (Spoilers but not really for old games)

The final form of Lavos from Chrono Trigger for SNES: an alien in gold armor vaguely like the Frieza force, with long spindly white arms, a small head set inside its helmet, duck-like feet and 2 floating bits. Not my favorite form (that would be the one that looks like Frieza with laser nipples) but still super memorable design

First form of Reverie, the final boss from Trails in the Sky: First Chapter (modern Remake pictured). Reverie is a mech with white and gold armor, a tiny orb head inside what appears to be a helmet, long spindly mostly white arms, three toed feet (not quite duck-like, but close), and two floating bits on either side. Sadly, it doesn't do the "true body is one of the bits" gimmick from Chrono Trigger, but one bit has insane physical defense and the other has insane magic defense so you have to consider what types of attacks you use.

I've seen a decent amount of lamenting how 12-13 episodes isn't enough to tell a whole story and while I agree to a point it's kinda neat we got 2 6 episode anime this season and neither of them seem to have suffered for it

So Ryza discovers a new ruin in the postgame that happens to look like a baseball stadium. A cross-dimensional league is formed with the other Atelier games (Nelke is involved somehow?) then the gyaru vendor from Ballgame shows up and everyone gets blackout drunk.
