The (rather unimpressive) native Broadleaf milkweed (Asclepias latifolia) is everywhere, here, and starting to pop. But not a monarch, nor monarch egg in sight. The native bees however, are quite happy with it.

Leggy stalk with broad, ripply leaves up the purple stem to a kind of scrawny globe of small, creamy flowers.

Had some visitors onto and in front of the porch. Peter Rabbit, a roadrunner, and an ...otter. You heard me, an OTTER. In Oklahoma! We're about 900 ft from the lake, and our small creek leads to it so...otter! (My vet and a former zoo curator of mammals confirm from the poor video: river otter.) 🥰

Here's the native basketflower that comes up here. (Cross Timbers, Cleveland Co, OK) There's no rosette of leaves at the base.

Ohmygosh, this is the Year of the Yucca! Been watching the leaves of this volunteer every year for 4? 5? years; it has spread but never flowered. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you...a yucca bud! (I assume it's Yucca glauca but we'll have to see.)

Up and out of dried leaf litter, spiky green leaves (up to 24" tall) and a bud shaft above them.

The sand plum (Prunus angustifolia) is blooming! We used to have lots of these wonderful native shrubs (strangers would come out to pick the fruits from the easements to make jelly) but now, not so much.

White, 5-petal flowers with creamy centers bloom in clusters along bare branches. Lots of white buds, too, almost ready to open.

Natives are popping up and open everywhere on this little patch of prairie. Black raspberries (or "blackcaps" as we called them *back east*), are blooming. Saw my first bumble of the year but the pics are awful. (How @juliejam.bsky.social takes such great pics w her phone is a mystery to me 😉)

Pines are not native to my part of the Cross Timbers region of OK, but thanks to squirrels, deer, raccoons, turkeys, and woodpeckers they've naturalized onto nearby state land, easements.... Don't know the species of this guy but I suspect it to be loblolly. Will it stay, or go...haven't decided. 🤔

Volunteerism continues on my little bit of prairie. Over the last 3-4 years, yaupon hollies have been popping up in the wooded areas and under large, lone trees thanks especially to cedar waxwings, cardinals and jays.

Golden crownbeard (Verbesina encelioides). Blooms in Oklahoma June to the first frost. The number and variety of pollinators (including monarchs) it supports, especially Sept-Oct is unmatched.

I bought myself a birthday present. (No, it's not my birthday.) Replaced the 1-yr-old 196cc walk-behind Dewalt mower because of its latest little issue: leaking fuel while mowing, causing dry prairie grass to smolder. The 163cc Toro isn't as powerful as my old Troybilt but... Let the fun begin.

A couple down-slope acres of dry, native prairie grasses (and some non-native invasives...looking at you tall fescue and weeping love grass).

The Golden crownbeard is a patch of abt 500 sq ft. I was stunned today to see it shimmering, absolutely shimmering with pollinators (bees, butterflies, flies...), easily a couple thousand. Never seen anything like it my life. It's the only thing blooming now. Next year, 50' x 50'.

No cosmos but yesterday found 2 tiny threadleaf tickseed coreopsis while mowing.

2 tiny yellow coreopsis just taller than the dried, brown and mowed prairie grass, with a patch of their green needle-like leaves to the right of the flowers.

So, frogs. I adore them. With all the rain this year, they are abundant and always singing. These are my best guesses for id, according to the list of Okie frogs and toads at the terrific website thefroglady.org.
