Actually, this reminds me of the time my friend and I were left alone in his stepdad's Grand National outside of a Pontiac dealership. My friend opened the center console to show me a handgun. We were about 9 years old. Leaving Florida had to have increased my life expectancy.

I rarely saw my actual uncles, but my dad's best friend that we called uncle drove a dark grey 3rd gen Camaro. Very appropriate for South Florida in the late 80s. Definitely had a handgun in the center console.

I took a picture from the other side to capture the sunrise and realized it shows the non-directional wheels. The opposite end of the GM spectrum from the C4 Corvette's sawblades.

I had a busy day at work, so I forgot I even took this picture until I was just walking my dog by the same spot. This Beretta stopped me in my tracks while riding my bike to work. I couldn't ride by without capturing it for posterity. I can't remember the last time I saw one in the wild.

I'm so fortunate to be able to have this time with my dad and to bond over these roads and experiences. I'm thankful John could meet us and show us the fantastic roads. I'm such a lucky person to be able to afford this car and spend this time.

We stopped at UC Santa Cruz, a place my dad and I visited exactly 25 years ago for new student orientation. It felt cathartic to be back there after the circuitous path I've taken in life. I'm no longer ashamed of the opportunities I wasted there.

We first visited Deetjen's in August 1998 and I had my first eggs Benedict. We used to camp in Big Sur until we started prioritizing Car Week around 2004. Deetjen's is still exactly the same.

The next morning we left at 6:00, wanting to drive Highway 1 at dawn and get to Big Sur by 8:00. We stopped at Willow Creek to pay our respects to CrocGT4, and then continued to Deetjen's.

We drove Highway 33 from Ojai and through the Cuyama Valley, a road we'd wanted to drive for years. It lived up to our expectations. We meandered for 250 miles, resting for the evening in Cambria.

The next morning we met up with his friend John, who used to live in the area and knew some great roads that he'd first driven 40 years ago in a Civic Si. We went to Los Padres and onto Camino Cielo. We drove along the ridge, with the Pacific Ocean to our right and the Santa Ynez Valley to our left.

We started planning potential routes, ways to include bucket list roads and nostalgic stops, waiting patiently for the July ETA. Then it was here, we left Petaluma in his 981 Boxster S and took 101 down. The car was mine.

Back in April I decided I wanted a GR and started looking. I wanted a top trim 6-speed and every single local car in the build phase was already reserved. I expanded my search and found one in Santa Barbara. I put down a deposit and called my dad, knowing he'd be up for an adventure.

I bought a GR Corolla! My dad and I drove down to Santa Barbara to pick it up and over the course of 3 days we drove 900 miles. We made memories that we will never forget and we saw sights we had never seen before. Have a seat and I'll tell you the tale.
