Such good folk horror. Have you seen the folk horror documentary: Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched? So so good and a great way to get more recommendations.

Attn: Any progressive third party. I am DESPERATE to have someone to vote for who isn’t a fucking spineless Dem. Give me socially progressive policies that push the envelope and ensure the “least”among us are cared for and I will give you my heart, time and $. I just want a party willing to FIGHT

I just deleted both Waze and Google maps from my phone and left single star reviews for both. It’s up to you, but I encourage you to do the same. That said. Any good alternatives out there? #gulfofMEXICO

My almost finished Athame. It feels wildly powerful. Final step is etching sigils and charging under the full moon. I am so thankful to have had this opportunity today. #witchsjy

For what it’s worth journalism is meant to uncover the truths that make the powerful uncomfortable when revealed. This new WaPo mission is fucking bullshit. Sad to see the fourth estate die under the weight of bloated oligarchs.

My favorite movie. Full stop.

Wild at Heart introduced me to elastic storytelling, the joy of being angular, thrash metal, individuality and personal freedom, Willem Dafoe, Laura Dern, the bonkers genius of Nic Cage, the big tragedy of love, the art of violence, empathy for outsiders and the fantastic cool of being who you are.

My first David Lynch film was Wild at Heart. I was in middle school and it hit me like a sledge hammer. Everything about it was frightening and shocking and irresistibly cool. I fell deeply in love with that movie and it has echoed through my life. I have been hooked on his work ever since.

I can’t deal with Lynch’s death. This one hurts so much. His work taught me about art when I was still very very young. And his heart is woven deeply into my experience of the world. We didn’t get enough. youtu.be/JKGlWR7gV4s?...

We did have a Solstice ritual that they were part of. I think they did enjoy it. I felt a bit awkward because I’m returning to the craft, so a bit rusty leading the ritual. But we did it! And I hope to do something for Imbolc.

The last time I practiced witchcraft I was in my 20s. Finding time for ritual was easy. A full moon Monday night was not a problem. Now, as a married adult with two kids, it’s harder. I lit a candle, gave an offering and incense, said thank you. It was brief. But it was all I had. #witchsky

Today my deck gave me The World. I love it when this stuff happens: The end of the fool’s journey on the last day of the year, and a promise of completion and fulfillment of endeavors to come IF you are willing to give back to the world. #tarotsky #witchsky
The World from The Ethereal Visions tarot deck. A woman with waving hair in art nouveau style raises her arms in a circle. Below her are images of a hawk, a lion, a bull and a person. The card has foil details.

I forgot the alt text so I’m putting it in this reply: image shows a wand made of natural wood root, it has a natural pistol-type grip and is wrapped in purple wool string and copper wire which hold a malachite stone halfway along the wand.

I’ve been working on my wand for a long time. Solstice feels like a good time to finish it. I found this root on a hike. It feels like it was made for my hand. Wands of #witchsky

Hey #witchsky! I don’t know why this confuses me, but when do ya’ll celebrate Solstice night and the return of the sun? The 20th to the morning of the 21st, or the 21st to the morning of the 22nd?

I’ve had to run outdoor extension cords out the window in the past. Not ideal but it works. Or if you have a garage, plug in there.

Pulled The Devil out of my Tarot deck today and decided the message was to engage in shameless materialism and buy all the Christmas gifts in one fucking orgy of consumerist glee.

Yesterday I learned that Franz Gruber wrote Silent Night. Do not get him confused with Hans Gruber whose night at Nakatomi Plaza was anything but silent. I can’t help but feel this is another win for Die Hard is a Christmas Movie crowd.

Yesterday’s tarot study card was the self-assured and cheerful Queen of Wands. Today’s was the burdened, over-extended ten of wands. What I took from it? Put down your burden and be the queen. So the boys and I took a detour to the botanical gardens and Mama Santa’s for a pie.

Anyway, I know a lot of us are in this same place. And we keep our shit together because we don’t want to ruin Christmas for the kids. But honestly? Fuck Christmas. Bah humbug. If you’re in the same boat, know that I see you. We’ll get through this shit together.

I’ve been sober 4 years. But goddamn I miss that escape hatch of booze. Just anesthetize yourself to the harsh reality of the thing. Excuse your hangover with a sheepish “too much holiday cheer,” and everyone laughs it off because ‘tis the season!

I couldn’t bring myself to put lights on the house this year. The decorations have been thoughtlessly arrayed wherever they were unpacked. No time for crafts or cookies. Every party is a burden of forced merriment. I’m struggling.

Patrick Alan Coleman @patrickacoleman.bsky.social · 06/12/2024
I just can’t with the holidays this year. 2024 broke me. It wasn’t the election or anything in particular. It’s just that the thousand tiny cuts of late-stage capitalism finally ground my spirit down. I am forced to overextend socially and financially while also being over scheduled.

It’s wild to me that when Dickens created Scrooge, the biggest Christmas villain of all time, his protagonist still paid Cratchit enough to support a wife and SIX kids on a SINGLE INCOME. Like, we’re truly living in post-Dickensian times.

The exception, of course, is invasiveness. But as Zinnias are annuals in your area that isn’t really an issue.

Hey! Editor of Greenhouse Management magazine here. There’s been a lot of discussion about moving from the term “native” to “beneficial.” Yes there are plants that co-evolved with your local pollinator population BUT if zinnias are beneficial to local pollinators they are still valuable. Go for it!

This os why I’m developing my Beet-minder app. When you eat beats you open the app and press the “I just ate beets” button. Then, the next day the app pings you to remind you that you ate beets and your bowels are not actually rupturing.

Maxfield Parrish sky this morning over NEO. The cold clouds a gray-tinted blush with washed out gold edges. A pipe and coffee after clearing the drive. Quiet except for the distant washing cadence of the highway. Peaceful in the cold morning. Everything broken by black branches.
