Our prime ministers have become mere spokesmen for the Treasury. They keep waiting for it to provide the answers. But it is the Treasury senior staff who are the problem.

The Greens propose to drop interest rates as the main inflation tool. So it's a good moment to ask why we discarded the world Kalecki knew (full employment as the aim), for monetary policy primacy, independent central banks & a buffer stock of unemployed labour. open.substack.com/pub/patricia...

Bailey tries to fend off criticism of QT by arguing its cost is “neutral". But that's only true over 60 years. The political consequences of the Bank's operations are immediate and land in the current parliament. Good to see the Guardian make this point today. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

So the mother of all economic crises is brewing. And it is reasonable to think that the solutions will require a permanent break with the dominant economic theory. Still, just like the Great Depression, it can take a long time for political leaders to realise that.

Whatever AI does “autonomously” its creators ought to be made responsible for it. Period. These firms purport to offer near infinite capability but conveniently claim they have no control.

I like to think about how economic arrangements get naturalised, presented as inevitable when they are actually constructs. I've found that art and religion can serve this purpose, and indeed have done so for centuries. This piece is one instance of that. open.substack.com/pub/patricia...

Our public services were placed in private hands under the erroneous assumption that profit incentives coincided with prudent public behaviour. But they do not, bc the private sector does not bear the cost of public risks, such as running out of drinking water or domestic energy.

Ending neoliberalism requires breaking with orthodox economic thinking. You can’t “end neoliberalism” while seeking approval from those who see its theories as the only credible option. If the solutions to our problems existed within the current paradigm. We would have solved them already.

New piece on the 2022 energy crisis. The episode highlighted real vulnerabilities. Yet the response was mostly palliative. Trade interruptions showed us where a solution might lie. We go into the next energy crisis not having fully absorbed the lessons. open.substack.com/pub/patricia...

MMT Richard Murphy recently published a critique of the core policy at the heart of MMT: the Job Guarantee. It was reasoned and balanced, but we believe misrepresented the Job Guarantee in key areas. Here is our response.

The UK (and Canada) obviously needs to sign some kind of new security agreement with the EU that excludes the US. But that doesn’t not require us to join the EU.

The tariffs are paid by US citizens not the UK. We do not need to apply counter tariffs where these would harm ourselves. But we do need to remove any US service that now represents a security risk. I.e. Starlink/X/Tesla/Palantir etc. We then invest in our own systems

Patricia Pino @patriciapino.bsky.social · 19/01/2026
When Starmer mentioned the “values that guide us”… i thought he would evoke something of the post 1945 spirit that his Party led. Instead, he centres the UK/US relationship. …Sigh It seems we’re going to sink with the ship.

Radio pundits asking themselves why our Govt seems fine with foreign states running companies within the UK. Well, what private companies & foreign states have in common, of course, is that they can’t be held democratically accountable by us. Our govt is allergic to democracy.

The size of the US trade deficit is a reflection of its status as a world reserve currency. It is a position of privilege which allowed the US to benefit from consuming substantially more than it produced, gaining it *real* wealth. Trump now frames this as exploitative.
