This area was part of the Tōkaidō, the ancient highway connecting Tokyo (then Edo) with Kyoto during the Edo period. Hundreds of towering cryptomeria (Japanese cedar) trees, were planted to protect travellers, over 400 years ago. It was truly humbling. #photo #japan
