Interested in genetics & attitudes to climate change. Once did research - now teach mostly. Trying to figure out what to do here. Serious science stuff or bad cartoons? scholar.google.com/citations?user=9…

The Ebola outbreak in Congo is now exploding in North Kivu, where 34% of Ebola patients are being treated in bare-bones health facilities instead of Ebola Treatment Units, according to @msf.org 3,982 confirmed deaths 😔 www.doctorswithoutborders.org/latest/ebola...

Ebola outbreak spreading like “wildfire” across North Kivu
The province is bearing an increasing share of the Ebola burden in DR Congo, while access to specialized care remains insufficient.

After 5 months of data, 2026 seems unlikely to set a new annual record...but with significant uncertainty around the timing and magnitude of the emergent El Niño cycle, that outlook could change quickly over the next few months. More from our May 2026 Temp Update, now avail: tinyurl.com/6jxwabaa

Is anyone up to using the data in this thread to make a rough estimate the max temperature 🌡 of an exceptional heatwave in the USA 🇺🇸 in around 70-100 years time? (Assuming about 3C warming). Or know this from another source. I'd like to add it to the graph. bsky.app/profile/raro...

We still don't seem to be at a stage where even the banning (or big tax) on the use of private jets would be a popular policy. I still reckon that most people don't think that the impacts of climate change either won't be that bad, or are uncertain.

This is one of the the IPCC 'availability and access to food' graphs. But I really struggle to figure out what it means. Is anyone able to translate this into the sort of impact you might expect at 2050, or 2100 - to add as a label to this grap?

Patrick Hamilton @patbhamilton.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
For India, CMIP6-based projections for 1-in-50-year heatwave peaks in the hottest northwest/central regions indicate roughly: 2°C global: 50–53°C 3°C: 52–55°C 4°C: 54–57°C These align with observed records near 51°C ...Higher pathways could bring 55°C+ events into young lifetimes.

*Grok referenced the CCC. Any feedback or suggestions for different labels? (I'm never sure if posting on BlueSky has much impact because you can't monitor link clicks/views)

@grok thinks the UK heatwave temperature is about right. For a 1 in 50 year heatwave: 2C - around 40-43C 3C - around 43-46C 4C - around 45-48C So, young children the UK could reasonably expect to see a 45C heatwave in their lifetimes. - Co-pilot wasn't convinced by AMOC dates.

Thanks. Is this correct? CMIP5 - doesn't include known uncertainties in carbon cycle feedbacks. So most of this variability is due to clouds. C4MP and PPE do, so carbon cycle could result in an increase of 0.5-1C in the upper estimate of warming by 2100?

Patrick Hamilton @patbhamilton.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Having browsed these papers & responses (as a non expert), I'm still unsure what has happened in those model runs that give the very high temperatures for the exact same emissions. E.g - Is it the Amazon dieing back unexpectedly quickly? - Or clouds behaving odd? - Or an ocean current collapsing?

Thanks for the summary. The ranges for each scenario are quite wide for the same emissions. It would be interesting for someone to write an article re what happens in these runs that give these high temperatures. E.g. is it a few big uncertainties or many little ones. Amazon, clouds etc.

Patrick Hamilton @patbhamilton.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Its worth also looking at the uncertainty. With 'current policies frozen at 2025', the range is 2.2-3.9 degrees C. So a 5% chance of exceeding 3.9C.

Interesting read. It would be interesting to follow this up with some interviews / focus groups to find out how people interpret 'climate hope' type articles/messages. My guess is that a lot of people will misinterpret what the authors intend.

This Telegraph article is a good account of the problems British farmers are facing with the drought & heatwaves. Thought one of the interviewees says that hot summers *might* be here to stay -- implying that he thinks that summers may go back to normal. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/08...

Large study on attitudes of European farmers to climate change. Not too different to non-farmers. - Most see it as a big or fairly big problem (~25% don't). - Only ~10% see this as entirely driven by humans. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

I'd really like to know if we can expect such fires in the UK in 80 years or so. And how much worse such fires in France/Spain might be then. 2 million displaced? I have not come across this written anywhere in the media coverage, except for a vague 'they will be more common/severe' Any ideas?

Patrick Hamilton @patbhamilton.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
There must be academics working on trends on heatwaves in Europe & impacts on wildfires on BlueSky. This is supposed to be where real academic discourse moved to after abandoning X. Has anyone seen a good explanation of this question?

Now over 200,000 people evacuated in France & Spain due to wildfires. But.. ...what would such fires look like in 50-75 years? 2 million evacuated? ....when will we likely start seeing this in the UK? I'm yet to see these addressed in the media coverage. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

French firefighters battle a blaze heading towards Bordeaux while officials in Madrid say they face the "worst fire in the history of the region".

We are probably on the orange trajectory- heating up our planet to somewhere between 2.2 and 4.7 degrees C. Heatwaves then will be something else. What would it take to persuade people that this isn't such a great idea?

Patrick Hamilton @patbhamilton.bsky.social · 05/07/2026
As far as I can see, it is impossible to find out what an exceptional 2100 heatwave will be like if you are not already an expert. Even after all the extensive reporting from the recent European heatwave. I really just don't get why the experts don't tell us.

To be honest, despite following this topic for about 20 years I still have little idea of the risks to agriculture & societies. I've never been able to translate the scientist language into something real, e.g. 10x global food price increase over 2 years.

I estimated 45C for a 1 in 15 year UK heatwave around 2100. But the @metoffice.gov.uk have this for 2056 (link). What should I put for 2100? What could today's young people experience? Anyone? There seems to be no info from a reputable source on this. www.metoffice.gov.uk/blog/2026/uk...
