Most of us were raised on a version of omnipotence that looks more like Caesar than like Christ. Letting that picture of God go feels heretical at first. It is not. It is faith catching up with the God who got himself crucified. www.parrott.ink/slow-and-blu...

One of the primary metaphors for Christian identity in the New Testament is "aliens and exiles." 1 Peter opens with it. And yet American Christianity cannot manage to treat actual immigrants with empathy. The identity we claim should produce a different politics.

Christians should be the last people who are escapists. If you take 1 Corinthians 15 seriously, the whole chapter argues against waiting for the world to end or to be whisked to heaven. The inherent goodness of creation means we labor in this world for its good.

Interesting that the earliest summary of Christian faith is a list of things that happened, not a list of things to believe. The creed is narrative before it's doctrine. Events, then witnesses. Something occurred, and people saw it.

One of the earliest Christian creeds in 1 Corinthians says "Christ died for our sins" without explaining how. No mechanism or theory. The first Christians were comfortable leaving that wide open. Most of the fights since have been about filling in a blank they didn't feel the need to fill.

Power in the Trinity doesn't accumulate. It circulates. The Father gives authority to the Son. The Son hands the kingdom back. At the end, God is all in all. Every model of power that hoards and concentrates is working against the grain of the universe.

Jesus' last word at the table is a promise: he'll drink wine again, new, in the kingdom of God. Even at the meal of his own betrayal, he's planning the next feast.

Mark uses the same word for "broke" exactly three times: the feeding of the five thousand, the feeding of the four thousand, and the Last Supper. Every time Jesus breaks bread, it's the same act. One continuous table. There was never a guest list.

The last thing Jesus did before walking to his death was sing. The traditional Passover hymn includes Psalm 118: "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone." He sang his own story on the way out the door.

Jesus knew Judas would betray him. He served him dinner anyway. Broke the bread, passed the cup. In the ancient world, sharing a meal was covenantal. Jesus entered into it knowing exactly how it would end. That's what an open table actually costs.

The Last Supper was not the Da Vinci painting. We know from Mark 14 that more than The Twelve were present. From what we know about Jesus' caravan, women and children would have been present. It would have been a little loud, a little chaotic. It was a meal celebrating liberation.

"You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons." Paul isn't being superstitious. He's making a structural argument. You can't partner with systems that exploit people and also claim to be at Christ's table. The table makes demands. It always has. We just stopped letting it.

Paul's vice list in 1 Corinthians 6 includes the greedy and the swindlers right alongside the sexually immoral. Funny how churches built entire denominations around policing sex and never once split over someone's stock portfolio. Selective outrage is its own kind of theology.

Arsenokoitai has a known use in the sixth century where a man is prescribed penance for committing it with his wife. If it meant "homosexual," that sentence makes no sense. But hey, lets not let the actual evidence get in the way of a useful condemnation!

1 Corinthians 13, the love chapter, the one read at every wedding, was written in the middle of an argument about whether Christians can eat meat sacrificed to idols. Love is patient and kind because someone at church was being a jerk about pork. Context ruins nothing and improves everything.

"Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up." Paul isn't anti-intellectual. He's anti-smug. Theology that makes you more certain and less kind has failed on its own terms. If your doctrine doesn't make you gentler toward the people it affects, you don't understand it yet.

There’s a fairly straight line to draw between “hit children to get them to behave” to “bomb a nation to set them free” to “burn in hell forever to satisfy a ‘just’ god.”

The promise of fundamentalism is certainty. Black and white answers to everything. That's why people sign up. But certainty quickly becomes a chain, and the only way out is through doubt. Freedom lives on the other side of "I don't know," which is why so few churches are willing to go there.

Most of us do Christianity like I write with a pen after twenty years of typing—white-knuckling it, shoulders at our ears. In John 17, Jesus doesn't pray that we'd try harder. He prays we'd be pulled into the very life of God. Sanctification isn't climbing a ladder. www.parrott.ink/loosen-your-...

Is growing to a larger size of church simply more likely to require relying on coercion, authoritarianism, and control? We don't demand weekly attendance or tithing. We have shared values, sure. But the rest is... messy. Turns out, messy doesn't scale well. www.parrott.ink/not-supposed...

You, Jesus, are you not also a mother? Are you not the mother who, like a hen gathers her chickens under her wings? Truly, Lord, you are a mother. For longing to bear sons into life, you tasted of death and by dying you begot them. So you, Lord God, are the great mother —St. Anselm of Canterbury

Thanks to Christian Nationalism, we have a form of Christianity that has hollowed out the gospel, scooped out its heart, and put on its husk like a skinwalker. It calls empathy sin. It blames the poor for poverty. It treats immigrants like invaders. www.parrott.ink/when-rome-we...

When Rome Wears the Skin of Christianity
Jesus didn't come to make Rome nicer. It came to make Rome obsolete. The fact that Rome is back, wearing Jesus' name tag, should enrage every single one of us.

Roman philosophy said the poor deserved their poverty. Jesus said, "Blessed are the poor." Rome said foreigners were threats. Jesus said, "Welcome the stranger." Rome said empathy was weakness. Jesus wept.

Making salvation depend on how certain you feel about your beliefs is psychologically traumatizing. It assumes God is controlling and domineering rather than loving.

According to 1 Timothy, the aim of instruction is love. Biblical instruction should lead to three things: Love A good conscience A sincere faith This means: If it leads to hate, violence, or cruelty rather than love, throw it out—that's the biblical thing to do.

Grace creates more grace, more love, more fruit that feeds others. The whole point of grace being received is that it becomes grace that's given. In a world obsessed with scarcity and competition, God's economy operates on abundance and multiplication.
