I don't post much here because I'm terrible at keeping up with multiple social media apps, but I'm active on the accounts linked in my carrd, in case anyone wants to follow there: pastellus.carrd.xn--co-2s72a Still leaving this account here, though, since I'm likely too come back to it eventually

I'm sorry but this may genuinely be one of the funniest footnotes I've ever read From Euripides' Electra. Yes, the quote is about Agamemnon I'm so fond of when classicists hit us with gems like this one

Today on the downsides of being a perfectionist: I was thinking of how fun it would be to get a tattoo of a Roman coin, but then I realised I would specifically want to be a coin that would have been found in Caudium, and from what time period? Aurius? Denarius? What should it depict? Oh, decisions

🎉 NEW ARTICLE! 🎉 www.workingcl... Dr. Christina Hotalen (drchristinah.bsky.social) was not best pleased with Gladiator II. In this article she takes a look at the flaws, foibles, and faux pas in the film, examining its potential as an ideologically-driven story that panders to the right.

From the minute we heard about this movie, I said to my friends there was no WAY I would write a think piece about Gladiator II, let alone watch it, and yet, here we are: I've both watched and think-pieced.

Process for "The Woman Who Understood Everything", colored pencil and acrylic on panel.
A wood panel primed in red with a white colored pencil rough drawing depicting a dog-headed Mary Magdalene collecting her tears in a goblet. The background shows a city, a cross on a hill, and a lantern. The border contains the implements of the crucifixion. The same image, but some white paint and teal blue has been added. The artist's hand is visible in the lower left, and a painter's bridge obscures part of the image. The same image, further detailed and with metallic gold added to the border. The final image, with finer detail and grass/plant textures added to the hills in the background.

Okay I think this whole time I haven't quite dared to believe that my book is "real"? I had a wonderful time writing it (don't get me wrong, it was also hellish and exhausting - I'm a nerd to my core so engaging with and bulding on so much brilliant research in itself was enough for me. BUT ALSO 🤭
Two OFFICIAL hardback covers of the book All Roads Lead to Rome, showing a polychromic statue of Augustus on a mosaic-effect background, with the words: All Roads Lead to Rome - why we think of the Roman Empire daily, by Rhiannon Garth Jones. Displayed on an unfortunately messy backdrop of cushions, rugs, and packaging.

TBC because the OP is framing this like libgen is evil: META are the bad guys here. Libgen is one of the only tools archiving rapidly disappearing digital libraries of ebooks. Now more than ever with banned books on the rise, we need resources like libgen. Meta has no right to scrape that archive.

This is honestly depressing considering how many upload their work to LibGen to make it available to the public and help spread knowledge, and certainly did not consent to it being used for a tool directly counterproductive to that purpose, and which will profit from what was freely available.

I can't quite believe I'm saying this but: I wrote a book! And it's being published this May! It's about Rome, its enduring appeal, the many different ways it has been interpreted, and how understanding this helps us see both the past and the world today more clearly. geni.us/AllRoadsLead...

Once again loving this interpretation of Caesar’s last words #IdesofMarch 🗡️
a picture of a book text. The text says "Suetonius adds that, according to some reports, he said in Greek 'Kai su, teknon' (which Shakespeare turned into the Latin 'Et tu, Brute'. It literally means 'You too, child', but what Caesar may have intended by the words isnt clear. Tempest cites 'an important article' by James Russell (1980) 'that has often been overlooked'. Russel points out that the words kai su often appear on curse tablets, and suggest that Caesar's putative last words were not 'the emotional parting declaration of a betrayed man to one he had treated like a son' but more along the lines of 'See you in hell, punk'.

This warning comes from Morrison's "Unspeakable Things Unspoken" (1988). In this lecture, Morrison describes how classics as a discipline created itself by making artificial distinctions between Greece and the world. She also writes of Greek tragedy read for supremacy #AncientBlackness
A large part of the satisfaction I have always received from reading Greek tragedy, for example, is in its similarity to Afro-American communal structures (the function of song and chorus, the heroic struggle between the claims of community and individual hubris) and African religion and philosophy. In other words, that is part of the reason it has quality for me -- I feel intellectually at homer there. But that could hardly be so for those unfamiliar with my 'home,' and hardly a requiste for the pleasure they take. The point is, the form (Greek tragedy) makes available these varieties of provocative love because it is masterly - not because the civilization that is its referent was flawless or superior to all others."
