Arguably the biggest democracy referendum next month: Virginia is one of only three states where the state constitution says people should lose their right to vote FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIFE if they are convicted of any felony. This measure would allow anyone to vote after prison.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, noncitizen voting is a non-issue. But Trump has used those claims to justify the push for stricter voter ID laws, attempting to seize control over mail voting and generally making it harder for people to cast a ballot.

It’s illegal in IL for cops to share ALPR surveillance data for immigration purposes. But it looks like police found a loophole— instead sharing the surveillance data with the Feds who tried (& failed) to prosecute people for protesting ICE. Excellent reporting by @mulchy.bsky.social

Hundreds of people died in county jails across the state in recent years. After @illinoisanswers.bsky.social reporters found that dozens of these people weren’t counted by the state agency responsible for tracking in-custody deaths, the agency said it would audit and update its data.

NEW: DHS's Inspector General releases a scathing report about the Everglades detention camp known as "Alligator Alcatraz." The OIG finds that the now-closed camp, violated multiple ICE standards. The OIG also confirms detainees were punished with placement in a metal cage in the Florida heat.🧵

Underneath is a picture of a metal cage that is 4 feet 3 inches wide by 4 feet 3 inches long, and 7 feet 9 inches high. The cage itself is placed on a tiny spot of fake turf, and then surrounded by another chainlink fence with razor wire on top. The cage is covered by a roof, but it's entirely exposed to the outside otherwise, meaning mosquitos and no air conditioning.

A second federal judge has issued an order blocking the new USPS rule on mail voting. This is a separate case from the one in which a federal judge issued another block last week. (This judge refused to block Trump's order in May because USPS had yet to issue a final 'rule', which it since has.)
