Since 1885, the only time that an MP other than a Conservative has been elected in the seat covering this week's Area was in 1906. In the General Election that year Harry Brodie was elected as the Liberal MP for Reigate, but lost his seat at the next General Election in January 1910.

Voting takes place today in Bosnia's General Election - there was a lot of campaigning going on while I was there. I don't claim to understand fully the labyrinthine (and arguably illogical) electoral system, which has quotas based on ethnicity. Early unofficial results are expected by tonight.

I once went on a tour of Aston Hall. The guide cracked corny jokes throughout, usually referencing 1980s British TV sitcom characters. This somewhat baffled a young German who was on the tour, despite her speaking perfect English. The guide's parting shot was 'onions time - that's shallot'.

Thomas Swain was a miner before becoming Labour MP for NE Derbyshire in 1959. His time as an MP was fairly inconspicuous, but his death in a car crash in 1979 left a vacancy in the seat at the time of the vote of confidence in the Callaghan government, which otherwise might not have been lost.

Despite the Liberal landslide, George Lane-Fox regained Barkston Ash for the Conservatives in the 1906 General Election, after it had been won by the Liberals in a by-election a year earlier.
