Voting takes place today in Bosnia's General Election - there was a lot of campaigning going on while I was there. I don't claim to understand fully the labyrinthine (and arguably illogical) electoral system, which has quotas based on ethnicity. Early unofficial results are expected by tonight.

A new blog post about the first half of my most recent trip. It is mainly about Bosnia & Herzegovina - a country whose recent history I found both fascinating and horrifying. I learnt a lot during my time there, but, as a visitor, I realise that I probably have only a superficial understanding.

Day 10. After missing out yesterday, I made sure that I saw inside the Arian Baptistery by getting there when it opened. Its superb ceiling depicts the baptism of Christ. Arianism was a branch of Christianity, practised by Theodoric, which was considered heretical by the Roman & Orthodox churches.

Day 9. Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century. In the sixth century, under the Ostrogoths, the Basilica of San Vitale was built. This World Heritage Site is an exquisite example of early Byzanantine design, with the interior covered in mosaics.

Day 6. Last night I watched Unfinished Business made in 1993 by Jeremy Bowen, about the siege of East Mostar. It was not easy viewing. The images will haunt me as I continue my exploration this morning, and for a long time afterwards. The young men & women in it will be in their 50s now.

Day 5. An early start to catch a train to leave Sarajevo, using ex-RENFE Talgo carriages. Pleased I bought my ticket in advance, as there was a very long queue for the ticket office. Even though I arrived in plenty of time, the train was nearly full when I got on, with no seats for later arrivals.

Day 4. First stop today is the National Museum of the History of Bosnia, not to be confused with the National Museum of Bosnia. When I went past the building yesterday, it look so dilapidated that I did not believe that it was still open. Covers World War II onwards. It was well worth visiting.

Day 3. My first task for today was to pay a visit to Sarajevo railway station to buy a ticket. Not that I wish to depart just yet, but Bosnian Railways have no facility to purchase online. It is like how things used to be during the European travels of my youth.

Obscure facts you discover on a Saturday evening. Francis, Duke of Teck, the grandfather of two 20th century British monarchs (Edward VIII & George VI) was born in Osijek (Croatia), then Esseg in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. I had the pleasure of visiting Osijek last year without realising this.

Yesterday I made a Eurostar booking. As all the tickets at the time I wanted to go cost in excess of £100, I used some of my loyalty points to get a tcket for free, being pleased with saving that I had made. Should I be annoyed that today Eurostar has a sale & the same ticket can be had for £35?

For the past five years I have taken a notebook with me on my European travels, using a page per day to record what I've been up to. Not surprisingly, the notebook has become rather battered. But it is now full and a new one is needed for future trips. I feel I will be leaving behind an old friend.

Off on a day trip to go and see something that I've been meaning to visit for some time. Apparently, it has become a lot more popular recently, so perhaps I should not have procrastinated for so long.

My wife said she would quite like to see the ballet The Nutcracker in December. As London is expensive, I suggested she check Bonn & Ostrava, as the recent operas I saw there were good value. In a remarkable coincidence, the Ostrava ballet company will be performing it at both venues in December.

Bluesky images are not loading at the moment (but reposts of earlier ones and links to external sources are). I would post a screen shot from the Bluesky service status page where this is reported, but that would be pointless as it would not be shown.

In the account of my recent trip, I was fairly scathing about Eurostar, arguing that they are more expensive, less reliable, and have a less pleasant boarding process than flying. It seems that I was lucky last week. Since a fire at Rotterdam on Monday, no trains have run beyond Brussels. (1/2)

On Thursday, when I was in the Cologne city museum they had on display the LP of Keith Jarrett's Köln Concert, a recording that I also have. Tonight I went to the cinema to watch the recently released film Köln 75, telling the remarkable story behind the event. Highly recommended.

Departing on a short European trip this morning, at the start of what will probably be Europe's hottest June heatwave. As a foretaste of what I may expect, getting to St Pancras was more of a challenge than usual, as violent overnight thunderstorms had knocked out half the London Underground lines.

You can apply for a ticket to see the Bayeux Tapestry when it comes to London this autumn. Given the hoops that you have to go through to get one, it seems that it will be very popular. I not sure that I will bother, as nothing can beat the magical experience of viewing it all by myself in 2021.

Today, I have reached the exact age (to the day) at which my father died. This has reminded me that I must not take for granted my ability to keep exploring and to savour every moment while I can. Towards the end of his life, I considered my father to be old, but I don't think of myself as old.
