a cool Magic art that echoes an even cooler socialist cartoon — Art Young’s “Eleven Hours a Day,“ protesting child labor.
A child feeding an enormous capitalist by climbing a ladder labeled “Eleven Hours a Day”. The capitalist is lying back, mouth open, eating “Profits” that the child feeds him.

Second: If you pepper the draft with just a handful of ”devil’s bargain” drawback creatures, Unearth becomes *busted*. Or… at least busted-feeling, and that’s what matters.

This morning I am thinking about the greatest Cube synergy card of all time. Study this one like it’s a cheat code to emergent synergy design, because it is. (🧵)
Unearth: Return target creature with MV 3 or less from grave to battlefield. Cycling 2.

To my knowledge, MtG will quote classic literary sources as flavor text, and the vast majority is attributed as below. But River Rouge *might* be Magic’s first reuse of visual art…

Even his more abstract work feels distant and inhuman. This piece adorned the hallways of Penn’s Engineering building where I did my PhD, and I always thought it was an odd choice for inspiring students: beautiful but eerie, almost megalophobic.

Sheeler was born in Philly, where he trained as a painter, but took these photos for Ford Motor Company to pay the bills. It’s commercial art, intended to reflect the scale and power of Ford’s machines… but I also feel, in the inhuman scales and Cubist-like fragmentary forms, a quiet alienation.

The new Darksteel Monolith in #mtgSLZ features a famous modernist photo as its art. Here’s a side-by-side with Charles Sheeler’s “Ford Plant, River Rouge, Blast Furnace and Dust Catcher.” 🧵

starting out, this Tezzeret was fascinating to me. he himself is a wicked design, but he also invited me to ask: who’s Bolas, and how can anybody be even badder than Tezz?
“Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas”

I use the phrase jokingly, but loosely it's "the Crystal Spray / Trading Post gaming experience". Fun in small doses. Not fun at Conflux's doses.
An image of the Magic card Crystal Spray, whose rules text is "Change the text of target spell or permanent by replacing all instances of one color word or basic land type with another until end of turn. / Draw a card."An image of Trading Post. Each ability transforms one resource into the resource that the next ability uses.
