Too true. He played badminton long ago, but everyone knows his name is Joaquín McEnroe.

The Brass Snowflake This 18th century chandelier is at Helmsley, Yorkshire North Riding. These fittings are often overlooked, and yet there are many examples - mainly 18th century - in churches across the country. I record them as part of my project. parishchurches.org

The late 15th century wall paintings at Pickering, Yorkshire North Riding. I recorded the church in 2012 but my images of the paintings were not my best work, so I revisited and photographed them again yesterday.

But it's a beautiful term. A big beautiful term. People say it should have always been named this. It took me to point it out. Now people realise the mistake they made. So sad. AI. It was fake news.

14th century monsters The tower arch at Plungar, Leicestershire, features some small carvings. Clockwise, top left we have a dragon/lizard, a monster mouth eating a ballflower ("Appetite for Destruction" vibes), A two-legged beast with man's head & a fox? bishop being eaten by tiny dragons.

Skulls and Shrouds. This early 17th century monumental brass to Henry Millner (d.1635) is at Wickenby, Lincolnshire. Lying on a plinth is the shrouded corpse of Henry. Above are the arms of Milner (sable, a chevron between three snaffle-bits or) flanked by skulls on urns.

Packed with monuments. Some people have asked where the image from yesterday's Parish Church App announcement was taken. It is the chancel at St Mary's, Bottesford, Leicestershire. An unusual view taken from five metres up and giving a clear view of the Rutland tombs.

Thank you. I am hoping eventually people will make some discoveries by using it (I've already found a couple of things - very minor things, granted - but without photographic comparison on churches many miles apart, unlikely to be discovered).

Thank you very much for taking an interest. I'm glad it is off to a good start. My next task is to finish photographing the remaining 1800 churches in my remit and, of course, type all the metadata in for the c.8000 churches still to enter. No pressure! 😅

You can - the contact info is in the Extra -> Help of the app and on my website (More -> contact). I will do my best to correct mistakes, but bear in mind it's just me - so it could take some time if I'm deluged with corrections. 😄

Thank you very much Mark. As this is my life's work (well, half a lifetime) it means a lot to release this. To paraphrase Pevsner in the Staffordshire volume of the BoE: this first tranche is just the ballon d'essai. The best is yet to come - when the complete archive of 9000 churches is available.

Further information can be found on the Parish Churches website parishchurches.org and in the Help system within the app. This release provides the churches of Rutland free of charge. Access to the rest of the archive is by subscription. 6/6

For the past 30 years I have been creating a detailed photographic archive of England’s parish churches. The archive contains nearly 600,000 images. I am currently working towards making this publicly available through the Parish Churches App. 2/6

Early bricks. The ruins of Midley church in Kent stand alone in a field. The church is probably of the 15th century and was falling into ruin by 1573. Of particular note are the courses of brick between the stone and flint rubble of the walls.

Three Sisters. Stained glass by the Royal Bavarian Art Institute for Stained Glass of c.1894 at Horsford, Norfolk. At the top are the Pyramids and the Alps - the sisters died in Cairo and Davos, 1891-3, presumably having been sent there to convalesce after contracting TB.

Stothard was commissioned in 1816 by London's Society of Antiquaries to record the Bayeux Tapestry. He was the first person to record the entire Tapestry in colour and make it available to the public.

The Bayeux Tapestry. What does this window, depicting Sir William Ferrers at Bere Ferrers church, Devon have to do with the Tapestry? The antiquarian draughtsman Charles Stothard fell off a ladder to his death while recording this panel, high up in the east window, in 1821. 1/2

I expect there was damage as, yes, the top has been trimmed down. If not originally a piscina it would have to be a capital. The internal lead-lined cavity has sides with apparent unequal thickness, so if a capital conversion I doubt its Victorian.

I didn't learn what had happened until it was all over. I had a long drive back to Warwickshire. I recall turning on the radio on the drive back and hearing "Both World Trade Centre towers and the Pentagon have been destroyed". I thought it was a joke until I got home.

On the 11th Sept 2001 I was looking at flats to rent in Cambridge. Beforehand I visited and recorded Landbeach church. The 15th century angel roof was taken at 12:46 GMT and the 17th century angel lectern at 13:03 GMT.

Cameras One and Ten I started my documentation of English parish churches in 1997 with the Epson PhotoPC 500 - 640x480 images, but amazing for the time. Ten cameras later the Canon 1Dx. Later this year I hope to swap to a Canon R3. It'll finish recording the remaining 2000 churches & their contents

It's a common theme for this time period. What is interesting is the use of an Italian sculptor.

A lovely white marble relief of an angel carrying a woman and her baby to heaven, made in 1840 by the Florentine sculptor Luigi Pampaloni. It commemorates 28 year old Louisa Gooch who died in 1838. Benacre, Suffolk.
