The Theatre Royal in Margate, Kent, was a location of interest for us both, even before we met, so perhaps it was fate when we had the opportunity to join an organised event at the Theatre, one cold winter evening.

Corfe Castle, Dorset, an impressive feature on the Dorset landscape, even now, when in ruin. Another location where Laura wasn't able to tune into the location.

Although it's never been central to our research so far, the location of the original 1626 Fort at Landguard Point, Felixstowe in Suffolk, in relation to the 1717 / 1744 Forts, to us at least, remains an enigma. Below are the four main sources for the locations:

Hadleigh Castle (the one in Essex, not Suffolk. You can go to the Suffolk one if you want, but there's no castle there, promise!) Oft a popular destination for would be ghost hunters in these part, looking for the famous white lady no doubt.

Dobbs' Grave, Nr Ipswich, Suffolk. This is a roadside grave of John Dobbs, who hanged himself at nearby Kesgrave Hall Farm in 1740. He was buried, with a stake through his heart, as was custom for suicides back then, at the local crossroads, where his ghost is still said to watch over the grave.

St Mary's Church, Clophill, Bedfordshire. Notorious due to alleged rituals being conducted there in the 1960/70s, it also has a history of hauntings too. Here's an account of a Policeman, who spent a night there in the deserted church, due to lead thefts, in the early 1950s

Mistley Towers, Manningtree, Suffolk. A well know Suffolk landmark and, allegedly haunted, although we suspect this is more to do with an association through geography to young Matthew Hopkins, the 17th Witchfinder General, more than anything else.

It's important to remember that not every location provides something interesting for the researcher. Here is the famous sign that greets you as you enter Chislehurt Caves, South East London. A place with a long history and, more that its' fair share of stories and associated folklore.

Just for a change, a little piece of publishing history from our archive. Whilst going through some of our older material, we came across these two original illustrations used for discussing the legend of the Nun & Phantom Coach & Horse, published in the June 1955c issue of East Anglian Magazine.

An unpublished photograph from our files. This photo was taken during our first visit to Hellfire Caves, Buckinghamshire, in 2007. At the time, it seemed like little more than a routine reference photograph. Looking back, it's fair to say It became part of a much bigger story.

Following up on a lead, back in 2024, kindly passed to us by @spookyappalachia , relating to a 30 year old Mothman sighting in the UK, we were shocked to find it related to a neighbouring village, in Essex. Our first visit culminated in an unexpected event....

An historical source reported an evil spirit had been exorcised at Chilton, near Sudbury and, imprisoned within a bottle before being thrown into a pond behind the village church. Over 160 years later, there was just one problem. Nobody seemed to know where the pond had actually been. (1/2)

Moments before this photo was taken inside the upper level of Landguard Fort, Laura entered the adjoining bathroom of Fire Officers’ Quarters F7 & was immediately told, very loudly, to “Fuck off” by what she described as a male voice. The reaction you can see in the image was captured seconds later

I saw this beginning to trend earlier today, so thought I'd give it a try - asking AI to write an unhinged unbio, just for fun. Laura believes she doesn't have enough online presence for one. I did one for her anyway and, a dual one, for us both. I was expecting far worse, I was disappointed.

Somewhere in rural Essex, a quiet riverside village has become the centre of deeply unsettling reports dating back over 30 years. What began as a simple referral would ultimately draw us into one of the strangest investigations we have undertaken. More soon.

A couple of years ago we found ourselves on a journey, which (so far) culminated at this Church. Here Laura surveys the building and, although we found the church to be locked on this occasion, she'd already 'found' where our target in the church lay. We shall be back.

We were surprised by the response to our Stranger Things M Cave post last week. Whilst on most platforms it was received as expected, but with Threads, it went down a storm, receiving 186,357 views, with over 286k hits on our profile. Not bad for a platform we consider 'dead'.

I found it interesting, in Volume 2, Season 5 of Stranger Things, a certain, now infamous cave in Nevada was referenced, in plain sight. Even our daughter called it, without prompting. I wonder if this is why Vecna / Henry Creel is too scared to enter.......

Our research when out in the field often involves moments of quiet attunement to a landscape. Here, Laura takes a reflective pause during one of our visits, perhaps a reminder that intuition and, careful observation sit alongside technical methods in our research.

During our last visit to St Peter's on the Wall (St Cedd's Chapel), Essex, back in 2023, as we started walking along the Roman Road to the Chapel, Laura, almost immediately 'received' what can only be described as a mantra, which she felt compelled to repeat the entire walk to St Cedd's.

The inner circle of Harwich Redoubt Fort, Harwich, Essex, United Kingdom.

Sitting on the other side of the river to Landguard Fort, guarding the Stour / Orwell Estuary in 1808 to help defend the neighbouring counties of Essex and Suffolk from Napoleonic Invasion, it's much smaller than it's Suffolk counterpart but no less important.

During our visit, Laura only sensed 'activity' in one of the rooms you can see here, interestingly, the one I suddenly got a severe headache which only cleared when we left the room.

Was this connected?

Laura felt this was one of those locations that would have an entirely different atmosphere at night. We both vowed to return in the future, at some point, during the evening.

In the past, if you wanted to capture EVP, the 'go to' equipment to use was an analogue tape cassette recorder. Time waits for no one and now, our tool of choice is the Zoom H2n audio recorder - Most importantly, it allows adjustment of Auto Gain - something very under appreciated.

Probably the only recording I've made that possibly captures spontaneous activity, is of some 'knocking' obtained during a calling out session 20 years ago, originating from (I believe) an iron candle stick, secured to the back of a pew, in the same church in Suffolk Laura and I visited last week.

Over the years, as we’ve expanded our research library, we often acquire other items with a paranormal context. One such item are the ball-pen and, b&w watercolour sketches by E Lovell, used to illustrate the article, ‘The Merry Ghosts of Borley’, The East Anglian Magazine, Vol 14, No.5, June 1955.

Just dusted off an old piece of equipment we haven't used since 2006 - our old Marantz PMD-222 field cassette recorder, which will be used in a new EVP Project. To our surprise, when I turned it on it still played, using only the power from it's internal batteries, last charged 18 years ago.
