Proof of concept Spine support. Dabbled a bit animating 2D in-tool, which would work but goes quickly out of hand as well...

Interactive gizmos landing in my demo tool 🎉 Below you can see the handling for an overlay operator with move, scale, rotate and pivot. Drags go through the same port-edit path as manual entry and so undo and keyframing come for free.

Weeks of work later, I can now make colorful cubes in new and unexpected ways! Unity calls this "Prefabs" and I’ve become much more appreciative of how much stuff has to go right before any of it works.

Got the Burnside engine running in headless mode which got me thinking about doing some basic golden patch render tests on CI. A weekend later, each build now produces this new tab. It's my first time ever doing something like this but my feeling is that it'll pay off in the long run.
Shows a custom 'Golden Renders' tab that's produced by rendering a patch from a sub module and comparing it to a pre-stored expected image.

The patch renderings are produced with each commit and should only cover my bases. A separate nightly build will then test each operator in a more comprehensive fashion.

www.youtube.com/@standupmaths just shared this gem and you know what? That doesn't look absurd to me at all.

Added multi-viewport integration to Burnside. Dear ImGui's implementation of this feature will never not amaze me. Just look at it!

The patch. Admittedly somewhat obtuse unless one's familiar with the individual ops.
A Bns patch that creates the effect from above.

Playing around a bit with SDF text, simplex noise, feedback rendering. Only OldEngl.ttf makes it possible! 😊 #Burnside

For now I've scoped the old behavior to the main loop. I'm wrapping ImGui's Push/Pop calls into C# IDisposables which makes state changes safe one liners. Regarding the tool: it's an as of yet unreleased tool for PC demoscene productions called Burnside. Big demo still todo :D

Sure, in the context of my application it's probably in the interest of the user to have live input values reflected instantly. I realize that there will be many use cases where it's absolutely the other way around.

I also tested timelines animation which worked out pretty well. The UI is a copy of proven patterns including Cables.gl and Premiere. Too late I realized I could loop the demo perfectly with the tune, but fixed it by moving all keyframes forward in dope sheet view.
A screenshot of the timeline UI in Burnside.

Each track can be expanded to allow inline editing of keyframe values, otherwise the dopesheet view is made for rearranging keyframes over time.

Anecdote: At one point I had 3 shaders rendering at once. I needed an op that manages transitions, only triggers needed subtrees and forwards transition data. Codex wrote it, wired it up, took screenshots and told me: good to go!
Close up of the scene render router.
The red circles say: this port is keyframe animated.

I was also curious how well LLMs can help arrange operators in a patch. The system is designed to be as self-descriptive as possible: LLMs can find all ops, inspect and edit the patch, and take screenshots over time.
This is it: the patch for the thing I've been building.
Since I don't know what I'm doing I'm sure any pro would have strong opinions on it. The patch does not use subpatches as integration of subpatch extraction and keyframe data is still an open area.

The demo tune is a MOD file called 6581-mycopcar by Jazz^Hjb. Since the player is written in C#, the main challenge was getting it to work on the web, desktop and inside the engine. Luckily, the WASM tools allow native references that are handed over to clang during WASMification.
Really just an "atmospheric" screenshot showing the .props file I used to wire up LibXmp-Lite.

The only thing that's cool about it: it's all done in the project, the demotool has no built-in mod support, only an audio service that accepts floats!

Took Burnside for a test drive and made a tiny birthday demo to see how it's going. I think pretty good! An English anonymized version is available at paralax.at/vibe-demo1/ Random demo tool musings below 👇

An early version of my dopesheet + curve editor. Still missing are proper Bézier keyframes, tangent handles, and a fair amount of stability work - but it’s slowly starting to feel like a real animation tool instead of a collection of UI experiments held together by stubbornness.

Dear ImGui running inside a C# node graph, in the browser. Authored with Burnside, published to WASM via Emscripten + Clang. I'm amazed myself that this works and I just wrote it. paralax.at/imgui/ Image: In-tool node graph

Perks of an immediate mode UI - no explicit state management, the widget just builds up from the data we have. Never had this solved so easily with other designs:

I've borrowed the trigger-based execution semantics from Cables.gl - it's such a cool project and my appreciation for it has grown since I've studied their code. My UI still needs a lot more work but then again, most of this new approach has been done in a fit of possession in the last two weeks ;)
Here's a screenshot that shows a node graph, an inspector with some properties and a tool render result. Not shown: two publishers I've prepared to make standalone executables or a website out of it.

Disney released a Muppet show special that's trying to replicate the tone of the original show from the 70ies and... they actually succeed? No reboot, simply doing more of it while keeping it light hearted and silly. Really hope this test balloon gets encouraging feedback!

Bononi also did the voice acting for the famous 2D animated show La Linea - his grammelot performance gave a lot of joy to lots of children and adults.

Same warning as every year:
A red black image with text in old German letters: "Caution! It's Jesus' birthday again!"
The image shows half a head of someone wearing a santa hat with hot glowing eyes. The other half is only red black rays that could also signal an atomic emergency or some such.

Gave my Slack bot the ability to pin emojis to other messages. It also can search on the web and a myriad of other tiny things all while having a somewhat opinionated oldskool coder personality. It's fun! I'm still betting on an emergent trajectory. Each feature adds to the whole more than itself.

AI image generation. Sure, it's controversial. But how would we otherwise appreciate fake German 90ies adverts for Cubase compatible MIDI beaks?
An elderly man wearing a grey suit with tie and glasses blows into a novel musical instrument that looks like a flute with an orange duck beak at its end. The background is full of colorful 90ies rays to give the image that intensity.
The image proudly states in German: Brinko™ MIDI Schnabel (Brinko™ MIDI beak). It also has logos on it to state Windows 95 compatibility, Cubse 3.5 compatibility and showcase the official General MIDI logo.
