Two words: women’s soccer. (MLS is fine too, but the ladies are better. 😉) We face The Horrors AND share in the collective joy at the same time. 📷: @rosecityriveters.org

Oh absolutely! The idea certainly isn’t original to me - I also saw someone on the internets share it and decided it sounded like fun!

I really cannot adequately express the amount of joy this book blanket project is bringing me right now. Not only do I look forward to reading the books, but I’m so excited to make my little squares afterward. It’s like treats on treats. 💙📚 🧶

I really love the relationship between @powells.bsky.social and the @thornsfc.com. Books + women’s soccer forever. 📚 ❤️ ⚽️

One of my greatest joys in life is being able to enter a bookshop and see my friends’ books. In this case, @jamiepacton.bsky.social! I can personally attest to how wonderful her (and Becca’s) books are…so go preorder! It’ll make you happy and look gorgeous on your bookshelf. 💙📚

Weird that we have to say this, but the government doesn’t get to decide what gender a person is.

Seems like a good day to reshare this image that I made back in 2020. Don’t forget to to make joy and rest part of your resistance. But if all you feel right now is grief, that’s okay. #art

On a red background, over an illustration of an orange tree with white blossoms and oranges in its branches, Scrabble tiles spell out the words “Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum.”

Me! But mine is granny squares - one for each book I read this year, in the colors of the book’s cover. Here are some of January’s. I love how many different ways you could do this kind of project!

Ashley Martin @paperpages.bsky.social · 20/01/2025

Mine’s ‘unnecessary.’ But the real struggle is that, without fail, I will write ‘lead’ instead of ‘led’ and spell check does nothing but laugh at me as it skims right past.

The nose! The pose! The tail wrap! What a distinguished little gentlecat.

I got to see Casey talk about this book at a local book fest and it made me love it even more! They’re so good at creating not just great main characters, but a vibrant supporting cast. Have you read any of their other books? I Kissed Shara Wheeler is one of my favorites.

So, the moral of this story is that you should read more books by marginalized authors. And while I’m all for DNFing books you’re just not that into, sometimes you need to check WHY you’re not feeling “into” it…and then keep reading. 5/5

Once I tossed that ridiculous, racist, and unfair expectation, I was able to appreciate the story. And I’m so glad I stuck with it, because the last quarter is so strangely beautiful and spoke to me in a completely unexpected way about learning to make peace with and love my body. 4/5

Eventually, I realized my frustration wasn’t because of the writing or story itself, but because I wanted this Palestinian author to have created a Palestinian character that other (white) people could love, relate to, and empathize with…aka I wanted a portrait of a “model minority.” Oof. 3/5

For the last few years, I’ve intentionally diversified my reading & this book has been on my TBR for a bit, as the author is a Palestinian journalist. Dramatic lit can be hit or miss for me, and partway in, I found myself frustrated by the fact that the main character is, IMO, not super likable. 2/5

This book was a fever dream (see: the blurbs on the cover using phrases like “bonkers novel” and “absolutely mental”) that I read in two days. It’s honestly not the type of novel I always enjoy, but my experience highlights the importance of books and their potential impact. A 🧵… (1/5) 💙📚 #books

I think we can change the world by having protected bike lanes and secure bike parking everywhere.

Mossy PNW winter walks are the best.

A clump of moss in the shape of a bird clinging to a thin tree branch.

Moss and tiny succulents cling to a rock wall.

Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica. It is utterly horrifying and wonderful.

Ooh! Adding this to my TBR. I have fond memories of reading Jane Eyre as a young adult (and own a vintage copy), despite also having tried (unsuccessfully) for many years to read all the way through an Austen novel. I have, however, read and loved Pride, Prejudice and Zombies. 😂

Book 2 (and granny square 2 🧶) of the year: The Empusium by Olga Tokarczuk. Finished this one a couple days ago and I’m still thinking about it. This story was so unexpected - beautifully layered, thematically pointed, and quietly spooky (with one hell of an author’s note). 💙📚 #books #crochet

A photo of a book, sitting in a small birch-colored wooden tray. The cover of the book is beige with a bright orange portrait of a woman’s head and torso. She wears a Victorian style dress and a large flowered hat. Superimposed over her face is a greenish-gold colored skull. The title is The Empusium: A Health Resort Horror Story by Olga Tokarczuk. Also on the tray is a tall, corked, green glass bottle lying on its side, a small tumbler made of smoky grey glass, and a crocheted granny square that is orange in the center, surrounded by mossy green, then beige. The tray of items sits on the ground surrounded by lush green moss, clover, ferns, and scattered bright red leaves..

maybe it's the residual evolutionary urge to hunt and gather, but it's so much more fun to pursue infinite sources and collect extraneous tidbits than it is to close my tabs and just write the damn thing. please, i just want to be in the rabbit hole. don't make me crawl out.

I recently informed my mom of my eldest’s name/pronoun change. She (unsurprisingly) didn’t respond well and has basically ghosted me since. After worrying I should be reaching out, I finally realized she’s an adult - if she has something to say, she can say it. It’s not my job to drag it out of her.
