For the past few months, I've been getting serious about software engineering and rediscovered the joy of being a student again in my 30s. That's why I started 'diary of a newbie', a blog about #learninginpublic, reinventing yourself, and navigating the tech world as a career changer:

Having studied computer science for the past couple of years alongside researching literary translators' relationship with technology, I couldn't help but notice similarities between how translators and programmers feel about their profession.

Part of the reason I find the book so interesting is that it challenges views many hold in languages and translation studies on technology, particularly around coding as a vehicle for creativity and programming as a creative profession in its own right.

This morning I attended the 'Teaching Programming Across Disciplines' book launch. The team has done an incredible job putting together their experiences of teaching programming outside of traditional computer science settings.

It was also fascinating to attend an industry conference and realise that we're not as different as we sometimes think, BUT there are still many conversations waiting to happen 👀 Big thanks to the whole SlatorCon team for a wonderful conference!

I had a lot of fun experimenting with collage as a poster format, discussing how literary translators' notions of time and effort can differ from those of translation technology developers, and what it was like to mediate a conversation between the two. Stay tuned for a couple of papers coming soon!

My heart breaks for all the amazing staff whose jobs are at risk, and for all the kids who dream of working with languages the same way I did all those years ago and won't be able to do so because of the ignorance and failures of university management.

I have sadly become accustomed to signing petitions to save language departments at risk of closure in the UK. The three petitions I am about to share hurt a bit more, though, because all three of these institutions have been instrumental in shaping the person and scholar I am today.
