Ida Lewis helped her mom tend Lime Rock Lighthouse, R.I.. Ida was a great swimmer & rower who 1st rescued 4 men whose boat had capsized when she was 12. The US gov’t awarded her the Gold Lifesaving Medal for her rescue of 2 soldiers. Lewis Drive in Arlington Cemetery is named for her. (See ALT text)

She was known as the bravest woman in America and is credited with saving between 18-25 lives. Responding to criticism that it was un-ladylike for women to row boats, Lewis said that "None – but a donkey, would consider it 'un-feminine', to save lives." Ida was the first woman to receive the Gold Lifesaving Medal. Lewis Drive in Arlington Cemetery is named after her. There was a link to a story about her on the Arlington Cemetery site, but sadly, her story is no longer there (as of March 19, 2025)

The Coast Guard now is in charge of Lighthouses in the United States. In 1924 the Rhode Island legislature officially changed the name of Lime Rock to Ida Lewis Rock. The lighthouse service changed the name of the Lime Rock Lighthouse to the Ida Lewis Rock Lighthouse – the only such honor ever paid to a keeper in the United States. It is now the clubhouse of the Ida Lewis Yacht Club. The burgee of the Ida Lewis Yacht Club features a lighthouse with 18 stars, representing the 18 people rescued by Ida Lewis.
