Boy, there’s some “Big Alberta Clouds” out there today. Real clouds, not just metaphorical cloudy thinking.
Poem is from p118 of Don McKay’s Camber: Selected Poems, with copious annotations by me.

This is amazing! This country currently called Canada is an astonishing place. Every different bioregion has expressed itself and bubbled up into life in the form of a distinct language.
There are more than 630 First Nations across Canada and more than 70 Indigenous languages.

I read this when it was published and won the GG, and the author was the youngest writer ever to have won a GG (20?, 1993), and I’m reading it again. When it was published I had never imagined going to Thailand myself but I’ve since been there twice.

While she’s gone, let’s cut “the waste” by amalgamating the three prairie provinces under a single provincial government lead by Premier Wab Kinew and his MLAs. No need to have three prairie provinces, three premiers. Think of the savings. 🇨🇦

Is it possible this is paintbrush? In purple?? I know the colour varies with the composition of the terrain, and I’ve seen from almost white through pink to red and magenta but never this.

Reading this nonfiction book this Saturday morning. It isn’t “difficult” to read but it’s a “tough” read, and it’s one of the books we need to read right now. It’s not snips and snails and puppy dog tails, nor is it cynical or world-weary. It’s got courage. Read it and see what you think.
