It wasn't recorded north of the Humber until 1999 and was first detected in Cleveland around 2010, so it's a very recent arrival though it's now reached southern Scotland.

Water Stick-insect was abundant today among emergent vegetation in lake at Cowpen Bewley Country Park nr Billingham. Other rapidly-expanding southern insects included Saucer Bug & Migrant Hawker dragonfly. None of these were present when I surveyed the lake in early 2000s. @teesbirds.bsky.social

In Europe we are seeing rapid changes in migration patterns driven by climate change. Many Scandinavian and subarctic birds which used to migrate to Britain in winter are now rare visitors. Storks, raptors and hirundines which once wintered in sub-Saharan Africa now linger in the Mediterranean.

The Zionism motion is itself symptomatic of GPEW's inability to resist entryism. Its proponents are mostly members of various Leninist groupuscules who have an intensely sectarian mentality. Few have any long-term record of environmental activism. They will tear GP apart then leave.

Some pools and runnels are at last holding a little water. This grassy rill on Seaton Common produced the Nationally Scarce scavenger water beetle Helophorus strigifrons. This seems to be the first Cleveland record. A species of seasonal pool systems in long-established fens and grazing marshes.

Well said Andy. It's quite possible to oppose Netanyahu's war crimes without resorting to dog-whistle rhetoric. Unfortunately, GPEW is too easily influenced by entryists and well-organised fringe groups.

“Zionism is racism” is not a policy but a slogan. It compresses a complex history, going back millennia, and a very wide set of beliefs into one narrow meaning. The answer to genocide is not discrimination. We don't fight racism with racism. I’m gutted to see this motion adopted by the Green Party.

Very well said, George. It's also crazy to choose a term so widely used as a code-word by Anti-semites. Sad that people with extreme fringe views have been able to capture the Green Party.

It reflects an underlying amateurism and gullibility which permeates GPEW. There is a long history of bad-faith entryism damaging the party but it never learns.

The GP has been torn apart by bad-faith entryists before but has learned nothing. These people will have f*cked off back to the SWP or the latest Galloway front in a year or two but the Greens will be permanently damaged. The general gullibility that permeates the party enables this to happen.

Netanyahu is a fascist and war criminal but the "Anti-Zionists" had strangely little to say when Erdogan was razing Kurdish cities, when 99% of the Karabakh Armenians had to flee their ancestral homeland or when 300K people were forced into refugee camps after jihadists occupied Afrin. Hypocrites.

From what I've seen, the opposite is true. The higher up the ladder you are, the less your productivity is monitored, the more leeway you get to do personal stuff in work time, the less accountable you are when things go wrong - in addition to the greater material rewards and better T&Cs.

All Brits are mixed race. 'White' people only arrived here in the Bronze Age, c. 4K years ago. The original Mesolithic population, who appeared ca 11,700 yrs ago, had very dark skin. Later, olive-skinned Neolithic colonists were of Near Eastern ancestry. www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/new...

Most ponds in this part of the world tend to be surface water bodies, i.e. fed by rainfall and drainage from a small catchment with an impermeable bed (either natural clay or imported material). The aquifers tend to be below the glacial drift though there are some groundwater ponds.

Many ponds here are still dry. This one at Hartburn didn't look too promising, choked with invasive Curly Waterweed, but it was full of dragonfly larvae. At this time of year these are predominantly hawkers (Aeshnidae), which have multi-year life-cycles. @teesbirds.bsky.social
