Figes guides us through the day, from the dawn (‘midnight blueblack growing grey and misty’) through midday (‘the sun was high now… shrinking what little shadow remained, fading colours’) to evening (‘the tide of shadows rising as the sunset glow faded.’) 2/

Arthur Christopher Benson was a pillar of the Edwardian establishment. He was supremely well connected. As his newly published diaries reveal, he was also riotously indiscreet. Piers Brendon compares Benson’s journals to others from the 20th century. literaryreview.co.uk/land-of-dope...

Benson paints a fascinating and often very funny picture of a public life at the heart of the Edwardian literary, educational, church and political establishments; but also of a private life riven by pressures of unconsummated romantic attachments and by attacks of appalling depression. /3

Benson kept a voluminous diary for most of his life. Considered too controversial at the time, it was sealed up after his death. Only now, with the publication of this extensive selection, can his witty and acute judgements on people, institutions and issues be fully appreciated. /2

He is also probably the oldest person, in terms of birth year, to appear on film. In his 1891 encyclical ‘Rerum novarum’, Leo XIII outlined the rights of workers to a fair wage, safe working conditions, and the formation of trade unions. For this he became known as the ‘Pope of the Workers’. /2

The word 'conclave' comes from Latin for ‘with key’ as cardinals used to be locked in the palace until they reached a majority in their voting for the new pope. They also had their rations reduced during this time! Read more in Loyd Grossman’s ‘Elephant in Rome’ pallasathene.co.uk/shop/an-elep...

Very occasionally the colours are fine first time - more often they have to be adjusted 2, 3, even 6 times before the whole run can be printed. A tiny percentage more black or yellow may bring a picture suddenly to life - a lovely moment when it all works. /7

This is crucial when you're trying to approximate the subtlety of a Turner seascape (or the spectacular saturation of Cotman's cobalt blues). The green box is for measuring densities along the colour band. /6

There each sheet is carefully inspected to check colours. If they’re not right, the density of one or more of the inks is increased or reduced along narrow bands, allowing a huge amount of control. /5

The printing press is actually 4 presses, each using 1 colour of ink: yellow, red, blue, black. Each is applied separately via aluminium plates that transfer the ink to a roller which then transfers it to the sheet of paper. (In the video the blue plate is being checked.) /2

Jan Morris not only tells the dramatic story of the magnificent Yamato but also interprets it as an allegorical figure of war itself, in its splendour and its squalor.
