Really cool things about teaching at a tiny community college that has dorms: international students! We use maps constantly in geo, I had my students look at a bunch of different kind of maps and answer questions about what maps have in common. And then make their own maps relevant to “home”!

This is so screwed up. When I went there the lasting examples of absolute human rights atrocities committed by Argentina were everywhere and stark. I hadn’t known much about it prior to visiting, but it was just fact there. Oh here’s the school they locked children in without water for days, etc.

🚨Lights Out Alert! Tomorrow night approximately 4.1 million birds will migrate through Oregon's skies. Help keep them safe on their journey by turning off your outside lights and drawing your blinds between 11p-6a. 📷: aeroecolab.com/oregon
Lights Out Alert for September 16, 2026 - 4.1 million birds will be migrating through Oregon skies. Dark skies help keep birds safe on their journey to their wintering grounds. Migration is happening now through approximately October 19 -- if you can turn off your lights and draw your blinds every evening during that time period to assist migrating birds, that would be appreciated.

It’s funny how seeing something can instantly trigger a memory you haven’t thought of in years. Like I visited my undergraduate campus today, saw this lab, and had a flashback to absolutely bombing a hydrology exam where we were supposed to diagram water flow around a dam. 😅

Hudson Bay polar bears spend the ice-free season from the end of June to (hopefully) late November fasting. They can't catch their primary prey (ringed seals) without ice. This fast is normal, but getting longer. This mom and second year cub are munching on berries for something to do. 🐻‍❄️🦊🌿

Expensive monopigments like Cadmium and Cobalt have scary toxicity labels, but are generally safe with normal “whoops, on my finger” amounts. Real Naples Yellow has soluble lead, it’s bioaccumulative; it doesn’t leave your body. If you see “hue” in a colour name, it’s a multi-pigment imitation. 🐡🎨

🐝🪲🦋 It’s Pollinator Week! 🦋🪲🐝 6 years ago, my partner and I began turning a derelict grass lawn in Portland, OR into a wildlife garden. Insects were the first to arrive. I’ve now documented more than 30 native bee species visiting or living in our backyard! This is just a sample. IDs in alt text.
A kaleidoscopic collage of 25 native bees arranged into a 5 x 5 grid. Each square has a letter corresponding to the IDs below.

IDs: a. Snow miner bee (Andrena nivalis) b. Brown-belted bumblebee (Bombus griseocollis) c. Small carpenter bee (Ceratina sp.) d. Longhorn bee (Melissodes sp.) e. Sitka bumblebee (Bombus sitkensis) f. Fuzzy-horned bumblebee (Bombus mixtus) g. Black-tailed bumblebee, aka orange-rumped bumblebee (Bombus melanopygus) h. Mystery Bee! Likely a mason bee. Possibly Osmia or Hoplitis sp. i. Nomad bee. Likely black and yellow nomad bee (Nomada luteoloides) j. California bumblebee (Bombus californicus) k. Either white-shouldered bumblebee (Bombus appositus) or California bumblebee l. Metallic green sweat bee (Agapostemon sp.) m. Long-horned bee (Melissodes sp.) n. Sweat bee (Lasioglossum sp.) o. Yellow-faced bumblebee (Bombus vosnesenskii) p. Mining bee (Andrena) q. Nomad bee (Nomada sp.) r. Long-horned bee (Eucera sp.) s. Mason bee (Osmia sp.) t. Nomad bee (Nomada sp.) u.
