I mostly keep my music activities on the DL in academic world but I’m about to become a lot more insufferably self-promotional about it, because I won the famous songwriter’s open mic contest at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur and am headed to the big Shootout final event in November.

I don’t think I’d “use” Luhmann in a pure form at this point, but I do think adapting his way of thinking is a good thought experiment, because whatever your object is, you need to develop a system-specific set of concepts rather than importing ones from outside.

Obviously, when you do this, you want to be mindful about what you sing, and how you frame it, and that was a theme throughout the class, and why we had (short and snappy!) introductory presentations before each song. You end up facing the question: what do we want to bring back to life, and why?

So: in the age of cognitive offloading, I wanted to try a course based around lived habits. Thanks to the students’ devotion—and the curiosity of all the students from our group other classes who attended—we ended up with something that felt utterly new, even thought it reached back 900 years.

Among other things we covered troubadour/trouvere songs, Minnesang, Bauernkrieg songs, Balladen, Heine’s Buch der Lieder, the Waldeck folk revival & Liedermacher scene, and Turkish-German songwriting. The idea of “Sprechgesang” also made some students more comfortable singing publicly.

None of the students were trained singers and nobody was forced to sing, but I modeled it as a regular practice in our class meetings, alongside repetition and memorization as habits that become part of daily life. They took it more seriously than I had any right to expect.

Not posting this as routine self-promotion, but because this event and the accompanying seminar were meant to try out living (experiential, embodied) relationship to to the language and music (which often gets tossed aside when songs are taught as historical artifacts).

On April 16, for my senior seminar on German songwriting, I organized a night of songs with students where they sang, rapped and recited songs & poems, I played guitar & sang a bit, & a colleague sang the final song. The feedback I’ve gotten from students has been positive unlike anything I’ve seen.

I love the German title of Lasse Hallström's Chocolat (2000), which presumes that audiences don't know what chocolate is: "Chocolat – Ein kleiner Biss genügt"

I have a big new essay out that argues that Erich Auerbach is the crucial figure for historicist reading in lit studies today + argues that the epistemology of such reading depends on the profoundly humanist criterion "sufficient passion" muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/articl...

Its interesting that in the late 90s there was a market for reprints of the most obscure and convoluted books by Jack Kerouac—Schwartz’s in Milwaukee would stock them all—and they’ve mostly gone out of print since then, titles like Satori in Paris or Doctor Sax.

Musical and literary amnesia: every one of these genres has medieval roots and was widespread in the early modern era, but there is a tendency in literary studies to credit their invention to Bürger and Goethe and leave it at that.

R.I.P. Béla Tarr. In 2011, I ran into him wandering outside, wearing a black shirt in the blinding sunlight on Hollywood Boulevard, moments before the Turin Horse screened at AFI Fest.

Interesting/encouraging to see local candidates connecting (a) the surge of energy prices for consumers to (b) the unregulated data center boom, (c) the environmental threat it poses and (d) government divestment from renewable energy
