It's hard to argue against the removal of Nicky Winmar from the Australian Football Hall of Fame, says Rohan Connolly on FOOTYOLOGY. But by making membership conditional on conduct, the AFL has opened itself to questions about consistency.

In the video of Trump talking to the US men's hockey team, when he says "I must tell you, we're going to have to bring the women's team, you do know that" as a joke about how annoying it is to have women around, the most painful part for me, are all the hockey players laughing. Actually laughing.

Normally the video of the dangerous leader saying "I can destroy the country if I want" is footage that has to be smuggled to the right person after a movie long chase against people desperate to stop its release and their failure to do so results in the leader's removal. Here it's a Friday.

Ridiculous decision. Jason Bennett is easily one of the best AFL commentators & has been for a long time. Accurate, incisive, good judge of when to amp it up or back off. Yet Seven have always kept him in the shadows. Not sure what the rationale is but it's a really bad move.

Daniel Levy from 2001 to 2017 was, for me unquestionably, one of the best chairmen in football. Ran Spurs exactly the way a football club of that size ought to have been. 2018 to present a different story and it’s, belatedly, the right time for change. Foundations are all there.

The clearest picture of corporate greed in this country is CEO-to-worker pay ratios. At the 100 lowest-paying major US companies, CEO pay averaged $17.2M in 2024. Median worker pay at these companies was just $35,570. That’s a ratio of 632 to 1. How can anyone defend this?

So if this piece on the Pentagon review of AUKUS is accurate, the choice to be presented to Australia is either: do you want to be shaken down for more billions in cash with no guarantee of refunds if the subs don't come, or do you want to shred your sovereignty? www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...
Extract from SMH/Age article on Pentagon's AUKUS review:

"Two Australian officials said one option for Colby was to seek more money for the US submarine industry, which Australia is already contributing $4.7 billion towards.

Two other Australian sources, one in the political establishment and one in defence who have both spoken to Colby, said Colby believed Australia should give a public declaration or private guarantee that US-made nuclear submarines would be used in a possible conflict with China.

Colby is on record as saying the US is not building enough Virginia-class subs for its own needs, even before selling Australia a minimum of three from 2030."

This by @jewishcouncilau.bsky.social's Max Kaiser is absolutely on point.
Dr Max Kaiser, Executive Officer, Jewish Council of Australia “This document reads more like a blueprint for silencing dissent rather than a strategy to build inclusion. The report’s vague language around ‘antisemitic narratives’ or ‘affiliations’ , coupled with its emphasis on the discredited IHRA definition of antisemitism, make the actions recommended dangerously unclear. Consistent with her past statements erroneously linking antisemitic attacks with Palestine solidarity protests, Segal seems fixated on driving a pro-Israel narrative and repressing legitimate criticism of Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Antisemitism is real and must be taken seriously. But it does not exist in a vacuum. Any response that treats antisemitism as exceptional, while ignoring Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian racism, and other forms of hate, is doomed to fail.”

One of FIFA’s biggest mistakes (which isn’t surprising considering their inherent sexism) is not launching the women’s Club World Cup first. It’s actually desired and would be so well received, which would have laid the blueprint for the men and given FIFA proof of concept to sell.

I’ve just sent the following email to the Melbourne Victory Football Club in response to their handling of the Pride Cup on Saturday. I also CCd Caroline Carnegie.
Dear Melbourne Victory Football Club,

I am writing to you today, as an LGBTQIA+ Ally to express my disappointment on how this past weekend's Pride Cup was handled.

I have held a family Country/Interstate membership for over 10 years, travelling from Ballarat to attend matches as often as possible. Last year we travelled to Adelaide as a family to attend our first interstate match, which also happened to be the Pride Cup. We had a fantastic weekend, and I was impressed with how the club officials managed us away supporters. However, it was marred by an incident after the match where a small group of men started a disgusting chant targeted at Josh Cavallo as we were leaving the stadium. I confronted these men (twice) and told them that this sort of thing was not ok. They stopped after the second confrontation.

This is why Pride Cup is important.
When it was announced that Victory would be hosting this year’s Pride Cup, I was proud that the club I follow was supporting this initiative again. This pride was quickly followed by disappointment as I read the number of disgusting comments in reply to the social media posts. While these opinions are unfortunately not unexpected, the seeming lack of moderation on the posts was unexpected, and is unacceptable.

Again, this is why Pride Cup is important.

The disappointment continued when social media posts from the club ceased promoting Pride Cup and instead began using ‘Original Rivalry’ branding. From how I and many others viewed it this appeared to be a complete capitulation to the homophobes.

Two years ago, Melbourne Victory had the fantastic Pride Kit, and while only having a pre-match shirt last year was a let down at least it was something. For the men’s side to not even have the same rainbow numbers as the women’s side this year was totally unacceptable. Claiming that they never asked for them just doesn’t cut it.

The Melbourne Victory website states that it has an ‘obligation to ensure football is accessible and empowering to all’, and ‘where all people are welcome and all people belong’. On the same page the club claims they will ‘support representatives of LGBTI+ communities in breaking down cultural barriers and making football a safe environment for all’. The clubs handling of Pride Cup so far calls into question your commitment to your own Purpose and Strategic Priorities.

Shortly before arriving at the stadium on Saturday, I heard that the North Terrace ‘leadership’ were boycotting the match and travelling to Shepparton instead. How can the Melbourne Victory Football Club continue to work with this homophobic ‘leadership’ while claiming to be ‘the club for all Victorians’ and striving to meet its Purpose and Strategic Priorities? How can LGBTQIA+ people, their friends and their families feel welcome and that they belong at matches knowing that the people leading the chants in the North Terrace hold homophobic views, and the club supports them?

The events leading up to and on Saturday have saddened and disappointed me, leading me to question my support of the club. I hope to see a positive response from the club, as well as a commitment to do better.

Yours,

Tristan James.

Just another manifestation of the sad Eurocentric view in football. Not to go on and on about it, but it’s an underlying theme in perceptions of Ange: that it doesn’t matter much that he won an Asian Cup, because it’s ‘lesser’, so it’s presumably easier. Doesn’t matter that he won the J1.

Donald Trump has broken ‘what was left of international law’ – Dr Emma Shortis
Dr Emma Shortis
Director of the Australia Institute’s International & Security Affairs Program
With his threat to “take over” the Gaza strip this morning, Donald Trump – with an all too willing accomplice in Benjamin Netanyahu – has finally broken what was left of the international rule of law.

For Australia, this means that the values that supposedly underpin our Alliance with the United States are also gone. Trump has thrown them out, as he always said he would.

It is in Australia’s interests to stand up for the international rule of law, in Gaza and elsewhere. It is in our interests to stand up for our values, and to use this as the basis of a renewed conversation with the US.

We should never be complicit in Trump’s violent imperialism. The international rule of law matters to us, because without it, the world – already a dangerous place – will be a lot less safe for everyone.
