Today's historic pic: 42 years ago today, 1500V DC electric loco L1152 on a VLine Traralgon-bound passenger train departs Morwell, Vic, August 30 1983. Morwell is 144km east of Melbourne on the broad gauge Gippsland line. The line was electrified to Traralgon from 1956 until 1987.
An image taken from a low angle alongside an electrified railway line. Looking up past a grassy area with bushes in flower, we see a streamlined electric locomotive in VR blue and gold livery passing a lower quadrant semaphore signal in the proceed position and hauling a train of tangerine liveried passenger carriages, passes beneath an overhead wiring gantry as it departs a railway station.

A boxcab carbody style diesel locomotive in Indian red livery with hi-viz yellow ends sits at the throat of a large railway yard on one of a dozen or so tracks that sit beneath overhead wires. Today's historic pic: N465 and Bendigo-bound broad gauge VLine train 8025 at Sunbury, Vic, July 22 1989. 1500V DC overhead electrification was extended from Watergardens in 2012, so Sunbury, 38km north-west of Melbourne, is now the northernmost station on Melbourne's suburban electric rail network.
Looking down from an overbridge over the end of a passenger railway station, we see an N class diesel locomotive in VLine orange and grey livery at the head of passenger train about to pull the train out of the station and away from us towards a stone overbridge in the distance. The end of the passenger platform with its cyclone wire fence is just visible in the lower foreground, and just beyond that is a water column for replenishing steam locomotives.
