Thrilled to share this! None of it would have been possible without the persistence and passion of so many researchers going back to the Arctic. This is exactly why we keep going — even when the results feel far away 🐦‍⬛❄️ More thanks in the comments 🙏

UArctic Congress last week and contributed with talk; Ecological consequences of less sea-ice and more light. Collaboration with @tomlangbehn.bsky.social & Trond Kristiansen. @bjerknes.uib.no A few main points follow:
Photo, Annette Kathinka Servan, UiBSchematic representation of the impact of sea ice changes on the prey-detection performance of a visually searching fish predator. Sea ice conditions are here represented by a gradient from multiyear ice with substantial snow cover, to the thinner and more homogenous annual ice with less snow, to the ice edge and open waters. Less sea ice means more light entering the ocean, and more light means better visual conditions for fish.

Less ice – more light. What will life be like in a bright, new Arctic? Earlier spring blooms mean less food in summer, when fish need it most. Polar cod in the Barents Sea are particularly vulnerable. 🧪 🌊 🦑 @oysteinvarpe.bsky.social @unibergen.bsky.social bjerknes.uib.no/en/news/en-l...

Mindre is – mer lys. Hvordan blir livet i et nytt og lysere Arktis? Tidligere algeoppblomstring betyr mindre mat om sommeren, når fisken trenger det mest.
