Another Oxford footbridge has been closed due to safety concerns. Inspectors identified structural problems with Swan Street footbridge, which links Osney Island to Ferry Hinksey Road and is used by pupils at West Oxford Primary School. Oxfordshire County Council is now assessing repair options.

The footpath through Mesopotamia has been closed until further notice due to damage. Oxford University, on whose land it sits, has asked people to find alternative routes until damage can be assessed and repaired.

Travellers entered Albert Park in Abingdon on Saturday evening, and set up about 20 caravans, with pick-up trucks, cars, works machinery, an electric motorcycle, horses and dogs. The steel pedestrian gate at the south appears to be cut and forced open.

Pedestrian campaigners say that a new wave of EV chargers must not come at the cost of pavement width. Oxfordshire County Council recently announced plans for over 90 new chargers, but campaigners have measured that “in some of the proposed locations the existing footway is only 1.6m wide”.

Oxford Preservation Trust has gained Listed Building Consent to restore the Grade II listed drinking fountain over Walton Well, on Walton Well Road. The fountain was built in 1885 to replace a long-standing trough over the ancient spring, but has not worked for years.

🧵 A county-wide proposal on EV Charger locations is out for consultation. We support EV charging as part of the move to sustainable transport but we object to where these are going. Almost every scheme takes space from the pavement instead of the road with the most vulnerable people most impacted.👇🏽

I first reported this to the council a month ago, when it wasn't quite this bad, but no response or action taken and the situation has deteriorated to the point that the only pedestrian and bike infrastructure between our estate and the rest of the town is basically unusable.

Oxfordshire has its first two “side-road zebra crossings”, installed without Belisha beacons or zig-zags, on St Margaret’s Rd where it meets Banbury Rd in north Oxford, and on Cornwallis Rd where it meets Henley Ave in east Oxford. Such crossings are standard in mainland Europe but rare in the UK.

'Pedestrian Priority' signs have been painted on the ground along the Thames towpath in Oxford. Polly Friedhoff died in 2022 after being hit by a cyclist at Iffley Lock, where cycling is prohibited. Oxford Pedestrians Association called for the signs in response to the coroner's report.

Nine Oxfordshire parish councils have applied for ‘quiet lanes’, where a road is closed to through motor traffic to improve safety for residents, walkers and cyclists. Each one will go through an initial assessment and design phase and then, if selected, be trialled for 6–18 months.

ICYMI: Free Sunday morning park yoga sessions across South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse returned in May, with over 2200 participants rolling out their yoga mats at 9.30 am in Abingdon, Thame, Botley, Didcot, Faringdon and Henley. The sessions are funded by the two district councils.

Now as we know, I love visiting historic estates and grounds and I know how expensive they are to run and maintain, so I understand and support the entry fees, but I also know those fees are sometimes steep and not everyone has the budget but everyone should have access. Would you like a pro tip?

Oxford City Council leader Susan Brown says she is “deeply concerned” by a student debating society hosting Stephen ‘Tommy Robinson’ Yaxley-Lennon at their Wednesday event – and says the society “must meet the full costs of staging their event, rather than leaving taxpayers to pick up the bill”.

The Oxford Canal has been shut to through navigation at Thrupp, near Kidlington, after a “vehicle incident” at the lift-bridge which gives to the popular Annie’s Tea-Room. The Canal & River Trust says that “the bridge will be out of action for the foreseeable”.

Oxford is getting a 24-hour vet service. Iffley Vets, on Iffley Road, will be staffed with three vets and three nurses overnight. At present, out-of-hours vet care is chiefly provided by practices outside Oxford. The new service is available to all pets whether or not registered with Iffley Vets.
