It's a formal way of saying "message". The artifical English cognate would be "bidship", as in "I bid you farewell" and -ship as a suffix to make anything a noun.

Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast: a castle the size of a city containing endless rooms whose contents and events are predestined by arcane ritual, the origins and motivation of which are long since lost to history. Big influence on Susanna Clarke's Piranesi.

When patients ask, “What disorder do I really ‘have’?” the honest answer is usually more interesting and messier than a single diagnostic label. I wrote for the @nytimes.com on what I wish people understood about diagnoses and the nature of mental health problems. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/11/o...

On further research, it seems like of all the animated or live action versions out there, there has only ever been one attempt at filming the piper at the gates of dawn - an episode of the 1984 stop-motion tv series: archive.org/details/the-...

yeah, it was leaning so hard into the "twee animals in suits capering through the forest" angle that it sort of forgot to do anything else. fantastic vocal cast, however: alan bennett, michael palin, michael gambon, rick mayall, vanessa redgrave (!).

i watched the 1995 animated version yesterday, and had a Nice Time without having my mind blown by the animation. it also totally omitted the piper at the gates of dawn, which you'd think would have been an opportunity for a showpiece, but apparently not.
