1/ In my experience, there are a very small number of officials at NIO who understand the dynamics of parading. They work incredibly hard behind the scenes to ensure the Secretary of State is well-briefed and, most importantly, no one on any side gets any surprises. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Honestly, Science Ministers keep falling into this trap. While I think it is inexcusable and we're right to be annoyed that this keeps happening, we really ought to stop calling them "Science Minister" and, you know, actually give it a title which describes what it actually is supposed to be!

The removal of Olly Robbins was a travesty which deprived the FCDO of the kind of leader it needed during a period of upheval. Talk about silver linings, though - Lindy Cameron is part of the small cadre of genuinely top quality officials in Whitehall www.ft.com/content/360d...

I'd put this into the "Spreadsheet Phil" category of DefSec appointments. Streeting has shown he is willing to take on a big, very expensive bureaucracy and - whether you agree with the decisions or not - make decisions on efficiencies. With Healey as CX this is clearly about defence procurement.

Science and innovation were within BIS, formed in 2009 under Brown. I have to say I'm less worried about the DSIT change than most. I may well be proved wrong but research did pretty well in the 2010s overall. Tech policy may be a different kettle of fish though, I admit.

So, so sad. BBC foreign correspondents are some of the best community assets we have, especially in places like Eastern Europe. Could write multiple posts about this - we lose our ability to understand the world if we don't have people to translate between our worldview and those of others.

BBC world cup coverage has stood out to me as being subject to cuts this year vs previous (and compared to ITV). Low-quality studio analysts, threadbare game coverage (tho covering every game - breadth over depth?), and v little 'colour' around the games. Some innovations (eg. 3d), lost under noise
