Tiny adventures still count. Even an hour outdoors can completely change the mood of the day.

Two children are walking through long grass, with woods in front of them. One is wearing a read top and dunagress, the other is wearing a yellow top and shorts. Their backs are to the camera, and sunlight is coming through the trees in front of them. A quote from John Muir overlays the image that reads: "In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks."

🦖 Gordon Ramsay could never. 🦖 The dinosaurs have been cooking up something special… Mud. Leaves. Sticks. Imagination. Mud kitchens = messy fun, but also experimenting, storytelling, #communication, #creativity and decision-making. And there’s no washing up (apart from the small humans).

A green plastic T. rex toy with open jaws posed beside muddy cooking pots and a white water jug on a sun-dappled woodland floor.

When did “fine” become the goal? A young person is attending, behaving, getting through the day. They’re “managing”. But coping isn’t the same as thriving. We should be asking: What would it take for this young person to THRIVE? “Fine” isn’t a good enough ambition for our young people.

A young person is sitting on a log in the woods, wearing a blue hoodie with the hood up and navy blue waterproof trousers. The photo has been taken by someone standing over them, so we can;t really see their face. They are holding a small slice of a branch with nails in it, and they are winding green wool around the nails to make a shape. There is a hammer resting on the log in the front of where they are sitting.

It may not officially be autumn yet, but you’ll have noticed it… A chill in the air. Nights drawing in. Leaves beginning to turn. Dewy spider webs in the morning. And the return of the need for a jacket. Autumn is creeping in. Time to get outside and notice it. 🍂 What signs have you spotted?

⚙️ It’s not “just” play. It’s PHYSICS! A bucket. Some balls. A pulley. A tree. And suddenly we’re exploring weight, force, movement, cause and effect, prediction and problem-solving. They’re not thinking “I’m learning.” They’re just having a go. Play is learning. 🌳 #PlayIsTheWay #STEMPlay

“There was none of this autism or ADHD when I was at school. We were all fine.” But were we? The absence of a diagnosis didn't mean the absence of need. Many children were labelled, misunderstood, masking or just expected to cope. Fine shouldn't be the goal. Thriving should be.

The summer holidays can be wonderfully chaotic... If everyone's feeling overwhelmed, try stepping outside. A listening walk, water play, a picnic or simply feeling the grass under your feet can help children (and adults!) reset. Nature connection doesn't have to be complicated.

A close up of a child's barefeet againts the grass, we can see the feet are slightly dirty on the bottom, implying they have been running about outdoors with no socks or shoes on.
