B & W photo of James Baldwin, Sammy Davis Jr, and Martin Luther King Jr. Arms around each other, smiling at the camera.

Text: “I did not want to weep for Martin, tears seemed futile.” His death was too terrible, the void too deep. “I may also have been afraid, and I could not have been the only one, that if I began to weep I would not be able to stop.”

When James Baldwin emerged in the sunlight, he noticed the enormity of the spectacle, which he had failed to appreciate on his way in. He saw that masses of people not only lined both sides of the road, but that they occupied every imaginable space. They stood on every rooftop, baking in the Georgia heat. “Every inch of ground, as far as the eye could see, was black with people, and they stood in silence.” They offered a mute testament to King. “It was the silence that undid me,” Baldwin explained. “I started to cry, and I stumbled.” Sammy Davis Jr. grabbed his arm and steadied him for the march ahead.

The rule wasnt going to ban asbestos. It wasnt going to overhaul the cosmetics industry. It wasnt even going to cost corporations much money. It simply would have forced them to test their products & tell us if they contained a carcinogen. And somehow even that—even transparency—was too much to ask.

The world is violent and mercurial--it will have its way with you. We are saved only by love--love for each other and the love that we pour into the art we feel compelled to share: being a parent; being a writer; being a painter; being a friend. We live in a perpetually burning building, and what we must save from it, all the time, is love.

Capitalism is also anti-humanity, in case you were wondering.
Kim Siever

Capitalism is anti-family.

Any economic system that requires birth parents to work (and work more hours) so that the owner lad can increase profits, forcing them to spend less time with their children, cannot be pro-family.

Don't forget—The top marginal tax rate in the 50's was 90%. You know, the time when everyone says we were most prosperous. #bringitback 🌱
Robert Reich

The effective federal corporate income tax rate:

1950: 50%
1990: 25%
2020: 13%

Stop asking "but how will we pay for it?" Restore the corporate tax rate.

That is how we pay for it.

Nevermind nice. Try being actively anti-racist. 🖤
When you believe niceness disproves the presence of racism, it’s easy to start believing bigotry is rare, and that the label racist should be applied only to mean-spirited, intentional acts of discrimination. The problem with this framework—besides being a gross misunderstanding of how racism operates in systems and structures enabled by nice people—is that it obligates me to be nice in return, rather than truthful. I am expected to come closer to the racists. Be nicer to them. Coddle them.

Just five months ago, on October 19, 2024, The Economist ran a special report on America’s economy. That economy was, the magazine said, “the envy of the world.” Today, stock market futures plummeted after President Donald J. Trump announced that he will impose a 10% tariff on all imports to the United States, with higher rates on about 60 countries he claims engage in unfair trade practices, including China, Japan, Vietnam, and South Korea, as well as the European Union.

March 22, 2017

I was a free lunch kid. I will not offer my backstory because it should not matter whether or not we were "worthy" poor or "irresponsible" trash. I was a hungry child.

Without free lunch and sometimes free breakfasts, I would not have eaten until dinner. There was no money to get a hot lunch and I suspect no money to buy supplies to pack lunch. I was a hungry child.

I do not know whether free lunch made me work harder. I do not know whether free lunch improved my grades. I do not know whether free lunch improved my classroom behavior. What I know is that I was a hungry child and I was fed.

I received my lunch without embarrassment or isolation. Every day, I went through the line with the standard hot lunch. I waved at the nonjudgmental lunch lady. I was a hungry kid and I ate my lunch.

I was a hungry child and our government, through your taxes, fed me.

Thank you.

This is not "small government." This is big fascism. They want to control every inch of our bodies & our children's bodies—and to have any excuse to punish us at the ready. My kid got a pixie cut in 1st grade. To them, that is criminal activity. Did you know in N Korea, there are 28 legal haircuts?

Arkansas Republican bill would ban giving "gender-nonconforming" haircuts to minors.

H.B. 1668 would hold liable "any person who knowingly causes a minor's social transition"—including change to clothing or hairstyle.

Penalty starts at $10,000 minimum up to $10 million damages for certyain forms of gender-affirming care.

It was “a sustained campaign of information warfare against the US aimed at influencing how this nation’s citizens think about themselves, their government, and their fellow Americans.” WELL IT WORKED. 😞 h/t @hcrichardson.bsky.social
Excerpt from Heather Cox Richardson 3.6.25 Letters from an American

https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/march-5-2025

According to a 2020 report from the Republican-dominated Senate Intelligence Committee, “the Russian government engaged in an aggressive, multifaceted effort to influence, or attempt to influence, the outcome of the 2016 presidential election…by harming Hillary Clinton’s chances of success and supporting Donald Trump at the direction of the Kremlin.”

That effort was “part of a broader, sophisticated, and ongoing information warfare campaign designed to sow discord in American politics and society…a vastly more complex and strategic assault on the United States than was initially understood…the latest installment in an increasingly brazen interference by the Kremlin on the citizens and democratic institutions of the United States.” It was “a sustained campaign of information warfare against the United States aimed at influencing how this nation’s citizens think about themselves, their government, and their fellow Americans.”

In other words, they used “political technology,” manipulating media to undermine democracy by creating a false narrative that enabled them to control public debate.

Luigi Mangione's letter to the mother of a sick child has been made public. ❤️‍🩹 "Your daughter is blessed to have a mother who loves her so much and fights for her so relentlessly."

Dear Karen, your letter is the first to make me tear up. I am so, so sorry for what you and your daughter so senselessly had to endure.

Pictures sent via mail are photocopied in a blurry black and white, but if you use 'free prints" (app) you are me to send it on color. It requires my address and registration #.

If you are able to send a photo of you/your daughter or the mosaic, it would mean a great deal to me. I will put it up on my prison cell wall next to your letter.

Your daughter is blessed to have a mother who loves her so much and fights for her so relentlessly.

Best,

Good. We need more like you.
Hope is not a lottery ticket you can sit on the sofa and clutch, feeling lucky. It is an axe you break down doors with in an emergency. Hope should shove you out the door, because it will take everything you have to steer the future away from endless war, from the annihilation of the earth's treasures and the grinding down of the poor and marginal... To hope is to give yourself to the future - and that commitment to the future is what makes the present inhabitable.

"One officer in the middle of the scrum, a combat veteran, thought the rioters were so vicious, so relentless, that they seemed fueled by methamphetamine. To his left, he watched a chunk of steel strike a fellow officer above the eye, setting off a geyser of blood. A pepper ball tore through the air over his shoulder and exploded against the jaw of a man in front of him. The round, filled with chemical irritant, ripped the rioter’s face open. His teeth were now visible through a hole in his cheek. Blood poured out, puddling on the pavement surrounding the building. But the man kept coming.

The combat veteran was hit with bear spray eight times. His experience overseas 'was nothing like this,' he said. 'Nothing at all.'”
