I just checked out an ad from 1938 and ran the price through the BoE's calculators. Works out at about £90 in today's money so pretty flash for a kids' toy even back in the day.

Bill Nighy totally messed up that pun in the audiobook (he makes it into a dirty laugh) and it makes me so mad every time I get to it

Page from the Sunday Telegraph titled "Gyles Brandreth: Brief Encounters - meetings with remarkable people." It shows the shameless assassin in front of a list of his victims and targets, from Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Quentin Crisp to Jerry Hall and Louie Theroux.

Just saw another one:
Quote skeet from Helen Kennedy: Isn't that nice?

It's a response to a skeet reporting that "the Russian oligarch who helped bankroll DT Jr's wedding celebration says the president's son has paid back the money"

Thanks! That also accounts for the vagueness of my memory - it was probably still in use when I was taught about parliamentary procedure at school. *dissolves into dust*

I think that one is an artefact of the procedure at PMQs isn't it? Where everyone lodges the same question about appointments because they get a follow-up question they don't have to announce in advance? I seem to remember something like that anyway.

Yeah, that's why I spent time going through dictionaries and corpora looking at how other people use the phrase to test my own instincts. It's why I've repeatedly agreed with you that your interpretation of the *intended* meaning is correct. Anyway, let's drop it.

I don't know if that's true in reality Vs in Putinist propaganda but he lived close by and said he used to go there regularly on business (before the war). It's certainly increased our worry about the plausibility of Russia making a play in the area.

We were near Kaliningrad oblast a few weeks ago and we were speculating that they must be pretty "westernised", as people on the old Soviet/European border used to be. Got talking to a Lithuanian and he said no, they tend to be insanely pro-war and ultra-nationalist.

A small painting of a dried, yellow/brown maple leaf on a grey background. There's a loose blue pill and a loose white pill to the upper left of the leaf.

Sure, you didn't read it that way, and that's why the claim didn't make any sense to you. I don't think the possibility of a misinterpretation is a stretch at all (it's consistent with my own usage). Your interpretation is correct but it's very normal for people to insist on their own (mis)readings.

(NB I'm very narrowly addressing that single reference, not anything else.)

It's the difference between "is true of antisemitism specifically" and "is especially true of antisemitism".
100
felt smart, might delete later @outeast.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The problem is linguistic. "In particular" is being interpreted as meaning "especially" rather than "including specifically". The phrase has both meanings. The intended meaning is the latter but the former is more common colloquially (some learners' dictionaries don't even include the latter sense).

I just refreshed my memory of it and it's extra odd because the examples given for things that are "not, on the face of it, antisemitic" constitute the strongest defence I've seen of the Green Party motion (against charges of antisemitism, that is, nothing else).
040
felt smart, might delete later @outeast.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The motion literally called for "the establishment of a single democratic Palestinian State in all of historic Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital." Not a two-state solution. Had those people not read it?

That's a stupid claim. If you say "x is bad" it's still an expression of an opinion. Nothing objective about it. See my first sentence.

This summer was pretty shocking. I'm getting scared about next year and what might break even here in the (so far) shielded CEE. What it could mean for more precarious regions doesn't bear thinking of - not to mention second- and third-order effects in our increasingly politically fragile world.

I should preface this by saying I have no problem at all with Giancarlo's horny Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic. But yeah it's not just this picture.
Painting "The Debate", presumably the scene where Smeagol and Gollum argue over whether to kill or help Frodo. The bottom half of the picture is just churned mud and slick puddles. In the top half, Frodo, head down, lies unconscious. It's reminiscent of the painting of the Death of Chatterton. Smeagol is kneeling all but naked next to him. We see only his leg, part of his lean and muscular torso and his strong arms. The fingers of one hand are hooked into Frodo's waistband. He is evidently dragging Frodo along, but it also looks like he's clawing at his clothing. A book cover design. On the left - the back cover - is a sword-and-staff-wielding Gandalf. On the right, a hooded, saturnine Aragorn clasps a drained-looking but stunningly beautiful Frodo, whose head is tipped back to bare his neck and a chain with the One Ring. It makes it look as though he is gazing lovingly at Aragorn. Multiple hands variously caress, embrace and claw at Frodo. It's very intimate.

Oh, good spot! Servants' bells don't really fit what Dickens describes, but it does explain where the idea came from. And would fit the idea that Scrooge lives in what were once servants' quarters.

When mine were of the right age I did that joke so many times they automatically winced in anticipation any time they said "I'm [anything]". The joke became whether I'd say it or leave it in the air. It was *hilarious*.
