For the 1990 French Cyrano de Bergerac the producers sourced period correct wheat from a farming museum, sowed it in a field and returned 6 months later to shoot the wheat field battle scene.

Quote skeet from Helen Kennedy: Isn't that nice?

It's a response to a skeet reporting that "the Russian oligarch who helped bankroll DT Jr's wedding celebration says the president's son has paid back the money"

I should preface this by saying I have no problem at all with Giancarlo's horny Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic. But yeah it's not just this picture.
Painting "The Debate", presumably the scene where Smeagol and Gollum argue over whether to kill or help Frodo. The bottom half of the picture is just churned mud and slick puddles. In the top half, Frodo, head down, lies unconscious. It's reminiscent of the painting of the Death of Chatterton. Smeagol is kneeling all but naked next to him. We see only his leg, part of his lean and muscular torso and his strong arms. The fingers of one hand are hooked into Frodo's waistband. He is evidently dragging Frodo along, but it also looks like he's clawing at his clothing. A book cover design. On the left - the back cover - is a sword-and-staff-wielding Gandalf. On the right, a hooded, saturnine Aragorn clasps a drained-looking but stunningly beautiful Frodo, whose head is tipped back to bare his neck and a chain with the One Ring. It makes it look as though he is gazing lovingly at Aragorn. Multiple hands variously caress, embrace and claw at Frodo. It's very intimate.

But crashes are less likely on motorways, even at speed. In 2024 (the data I'm looking at) a *total* of 91 people died in motorway crashes compared to roughly 1500 on other road types.
Chart showing fatalities per billion miles travelled by road type indexed to 2014. All road types show a downward trend but motorways are significantly lower than roads in rural areas and roads in urban areas. Table 12: Reported road casualties per billion miles travelled by road type in Great Britain, 2024

Motorways 72
Roads in rural areas	287

Here's one my son and I made a few years ago. We thought it was pretty funny but it went down like a lead balloon.
Panel 1:
Dad, dictating from script to son: And then, in the last panel of the comic...
Son, drawing on tablet: Please, not another of your terrible jokes.
Panel 2:
Dad: I write em, you just draw em. So don't be cheeky. Or else.
Son: or else what
Panel 3:
Dad: well I write the words we say so... (Writing on script)
Son: no don't do it
Panel 4:
Dad: You'll say anything I want!
Son: I'm your biggest fan. It's why you're such a...cool... guy. (Muttering) How original
Panel 5:
Dad: ha ha this is fun. Oh here's a good one.
Son: I never "metacomic" I didn't like.
Dad: Wait - what are you doing?
Panel 6:
Son: You can make me say anything. Well guess what I can do.
Dad's head is now an ape.
Son: ...heh heh...

Some more data points. Ngram viewer ain't what it used to be but still, some notable trends visible. "Rooves" apparently increasing but still vanishingly rare compared to "roofs", but note also the shift from "hoofs" to "hooves". Definite article included to disambiguate the noun.
Ngram showing a 21st surge in the use of roovesRooves is so rare relative to roofs that it doesn't even show in this ngram Hoofs declining, hooves rising in this ngram

Important note that's elided in the Guardian report: most negative impacts (especially emissions) result from the "organic" part, not the "free range" part. It's really not clear that organic is especially relevant to welfare (& given medication, possibly negatively so).
Graphs from the study. Free range non-organic is shown to be only slightly less efficient than battery cage in most aspects.

A graphic showing how 2024 Westminster voters voted in the 2026 local elections. It shows that the majority of Reform's increased share came from the Conservatives, with only a tiny amount from former Labour voters. Around a fifth of Labour voters were lost to the Greens and another sixth to the Lib Dems. Only a tiny fraction went to Reform. The source is given as YouGov.

Everyone is mocking but I don't think it's justified. The woke version has clearly crashed and burned - a flop for the ages - and like it or not, the rightwing alternative movie-making machine churns out hit after hit.

What it's about

A woman cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets lives for 300 years - until someone finally remembers her name.

Summarized by Al

Summary

"[Narrator Julia] Whelan's performance is unforgettable in this darkly romantic fantasy about one young woman cursed always to be forgotten... Her depiction of the darkness is smooth with a low cadence, capturing listeners' attention and their heart strings." -Booklist

In the vein of The Time Traveler's Wife and Life After Life, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is New York Times bestselling author V. E. Schwab's genre-defying tour de force.

A Life No One Will Remember. A Story You Will Never Forget.

Morning, Womble! I've just started The Faithless, by C L Clark (of this parish), having finished its predecessor last night. A mix of empire, romance, magic, bad decisions, betrayals and war crimes. I still can't decide how I feel about it all, tbh, but... well, I did move straight on to the sequel.
