We went on a search last night to see if we could cross paths with the Noocksack elk herd and it worked out! This herd is fascinating as it's a genetic mix of both native Roosevelt Elk and introduced Rocky Mountain Elk, with most of the current members having primarily Rocky Mountain Elk genes.

🧡🐣🧡 Tue, Sep 29 New calf at T36A1's side continues their 1st foray in their Puget Sound home waters. Official ID to come, but likely is Tierna's 2nd. Per Bart Rulon: "...still fetal folds visible on the dorsal fin so this calf is probably only days or weeks old". 📸 By Jami Cantrell 9/28. #psws

They're baaaaack! Every winter 10s of thousands of snow geese descend on the Skagit Valley from their nesting grounds in the Arctic to feast for the winter. We generally see them start to arrive in mid-October, but we have some early arrivals this year!

September around Puget Sound means dropping everything on a perfect day to soak up the sun and get into the mountains before the roads are closed and the rain is here. 🏔️💕

Have you ever seen these bizarre looking cylinders on the beach at low tide? They're opalescent squid egg sacs and if you look close enough in the right light you can see the individual eggs inside each cylinder. They're laid in clusters but occasionally they get dislodged and end up on shore. 🦑

They were cool and in decent condition. A little dirty, but the tread was good and they’d clean up well. I definitely would have gotten them if they were in my size. Hope they’re still there!

This ties in to why our endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales are struggling, too. They rely on fish and the fish populations are deeply affected by the changing oceans, human consumption, and environmental pressure on their natal streams. It's all connected! 💕
110
Our Wild Puget Sound @ourwildpugetsound.com · 12/06/2026
Bigg's killer whales, on the other hand, eat marine mammals like seals, sea lions, and porpoises and there are an abundance of them in the territory that they roam, so they're able to deal with the changing ocean conditions more easily since they're nourished and they're bodies aren't as strained.
120
Our Wild Puget Sound @ourwildpugetsound.com · 12/06/2026
As warm waters affect the swaths of sea ice those crustacean populations aren't as reliable to find and the gray whales, who are already malnourished from the migration, have a hard time bulking up enough to sustain them longterm.
130
Our Wild Puget Sound @ourwildpugetsound.com · 12/06/2026
There are a lot of intersecting factors, but a lot of things that make the populations and their keys to survival very different The key one here is food. Gray whales make a giant migration to the Arctic, relying on tiny crustaceans as their food source. Those crustaceans rely on sea ice to survive
