Fighting for a fair share of Scotland's renewable energy wealth. Community energy, energy justice, public ownership. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 www.ourpower.scot/take-action

I was interviewed by BBC Scotland yesterday about Syngenta’s announcement that they intend to shut their chemicals plant in Grangemouth, threatening 400 jobs. The key points are the high human cost of more local manufacturing job losses and that government has a window to act decisively.

The transition just isn't happening fast enough. We need more investment from the ScotGov. Workers shouldn't be punished for government inaction.

"the experience of workers at Grangemouth and
across Scotland's wider oil industry is a
profoundly unjust transition. It's one of
unemployment and false promises that have been
made to them at Holyrood and Westminster.” - Dr. Ewan Gibbs University of Glasgow

Scotland's energy future demands more ambition. With the right leadership, we could all be benefitting from our renewables. But, right now the only ones benefitting are private corporations and their share holders.

The Scottish government has already shown a lot of boldness in this area. Scottish water, Scotrail, Calmac and more are all publicly owned by the Scottish government. Why not add renewables and renewable manufacturing to that list?

Privatised energy continues to deliver more and more money into the pockets of CEO’s and shareholders while leaving us with less and less. It’s time we take our power back.

Notably, consumer prices did initially go down in the 90’s but by the 2000’s consumer electricity prices spiked higher than the nationalised era.

ourpower.bsky.social @ourpower.scot · 29/09/2026
The goal of privatisation was to put government owned assets in the hands of private corporations, with the hope of more economic growth and expanded efficiency. However, privatisation in the UK achieved neither goal.
120
ourpower.bsky.social @ourpower.scot · 29/09/2026
That all changed when Margaret Thatcher’s government sold off £86 billion in critical assets across energy, water, and more. This wave of privatisation would initially catch up with Scotland where our electricity generation was sold off.

In 1979, homes across the UK were heated and powered by nationalised gas and electricity. Scotland previously had a devolved system managed by the North of Scotland Hydro Board, which was state owned but locally managed.

What we need in Scotland is not meagre community benefits but a real say in our local planning processes and, when it comes to wind turbines at least, an ownership stake. Scotland deserves better than having big projects hoisted onto us without our input. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⚡️

Now, some are arguing that the hyperscale data centres being proposed everywhere in Scotland should also be paying a community benefit. If there's anyone I trust less than an energy company, it's got to be an AI data centre.
110
ourpower.bsky.social @ourpower.scot · 23/09/2026
Great, right? Not really. In a recent study, @theferret.scot found that many wind developers are shortchanging communities on this payment. *gasp* Who would have imagined that big energy companies are not paying their fair share??? www.theferret.scot/communities-...

It is true that communities do get what's called a "community benefit payment" from onshore wind farms. Back in 2014, the Scottish government said wind developers should pay communities a suggested £5,000 per megawatt hour per year.

Community-owned wind turbines are transforming local towns in Scotland. Instead of energy profits going to distant corporations, these communities own their power and use 100% of the profits to fund local projects.
