Hear me out: get yourself a pig bladder. Hours of entertainment
An illustration from Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder. A blonde girl in a blue dress is tossing what appears to be a white balloon to a younger brunette girl in a red dress. The accompanying text reads:

"You can't beat hickory-cured ham," Pa said.
He was blowing up the bladder. It made a little white balloon, and he tied the end tight with a string and gave it to Mary and Laura to play with. They could throw it into the air and spat it back and forth with their hands.

An online job application with two "Qualifying Questions". The first is "Do you get energy from working with a variety of people?" It has an asterisk, meaning it's a required question. The second is "Do you consider yourself adaptable?" No asterisk this time for some reason. In both text boxes I typed No

Some hand-drawn characters from the game Mouse Guard. A yellow mouse with an eyepatch and a notched ear holds a shield. A fox-coloured mouse uses a fishhook as a grappling hook. A brown mouse with multiple piercings wields a halberd. A grey mouse, pointing offscreen, has two swords strapped to its back and holds a leather bag. A buff (both in colour and physique) mouse holds a battleaxe.

A friend asked about dream interpretation, which inspired me to see if the dream dictionary that I had as a teenage occultist is still in print. Not only does Amazon still carry the same bright purple edition, you can also get some bonus marriage drama!
An Amazon review by "Monday's Destiny" that reads:

Fourteen years ago I had this book, and actually... "I lived by it," dream by dream. Because I'm a dreamer, and my dreams always come true. Believe this: I actually slept with my dream book, therefore, when I got married my husband made me get rid of it. I never stop dreaming. My husband not knowing...I tried several other dream books to interpret my dreams. Then I found this dream book, which is: the Zolar's Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Dreams by Zolar Entertainment, and I ordered it. As of today, I'm living proof the ZEDOD is the most accurate dream reference book to have for one's self.

Just the classics for me
3–0 ballgame with the Reds in front of the Royals as we go to the top half of the fifth inning, Castellanos to lead things off. Jim Day's gonna be taking us the rest of the way through this game as Holland takes over on the mound. Um, I made a comment earlier tonight that I guess went out over the air that I am deeply ashamed of. If I have hurt anyone out there, I can't tell you how much I say from the bottom of my heart, I'm so very, very sorry. I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith—as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it will be a home run, and so that'll make it a 4–0 ballgame. I don't know if I'm gonna be putting on this headset again. I don't know if it's gonna be for the Reds, I don't know if it's gonna be for my bosses at Fox. I want to apologize for the people who sign my paycheck—for the Reds, for Fox Sports Ohio, for the people I work with, for anybody that I've offended here tonight. I can't begin to tell you how deeply sorry I am. That is not who I am. It never has been. And I'd like to think maybe I could have some people that could back that up. I am very, very sorry, and I beg for your forgiveness. Jim Day will take you the rest of the way home.

I loved this article about why the trolley problem (not the situation the problem describes, but the thought experiment called "the trolley problem") makes people less caring and sloppier thinkers. www.currentaffairs.org/news/2017/11...
With philosophical hypotheticals, you’re supposed to set aside the question of why things are the way they are, and just accept that the choices are the choices. That’s exactly what we should never do, though: in order to assign moral responsibility for a particular set of bad outcomes, you need to understand who had agency in causing things to be the way they are. In the case of a trolley accident, probably the least important question is what the person who was frantically trying to stop the trolley should have done, since all of their options are bad and they will be improvising. We should spend far more time inquiring into the trolley company’s lackadaisical attitude to safety precautions, and whether it’s morally justified to cut down on voluntary brake inspections in order to decrease operating costs and maximize quarterly profits. It sounds as if we’re “arguing with the hypothetical,” of course, which you’re never supposed to do.

This passage from Zork STILL surfaces in my mind unbidden occasionally, decades later.
An excerpt from the text adventure Zork:

>go down

Entrance to Hades

You are outside a large gateway, on which is inscribed

Abandon every hope all ye who enter here!

The gate is open; through it you can see a desolation, with a pile of mangled bodies in one corner. Thousands of voices, lamenting some hideous fate, can be heard.

The way through the gate is barred by evil spirits, who jeer at your attempts to pass.

>ring bell

The bell suddenly becomes red hot and falls to the ground. The wraiths, as if paralyzed, stop their jeering and slowly turn to face you. On their ashen faces, the expression of a long-forgotten terror takes shape.

In your confusion, the candles drop to the ground (and they are out).

Years ago, a friend texted me saying that the narrator of "Oblivion" annoyed him, and I didn't know at the time whether he meant the game or the David Foster Wallace story. So I made this, which I recently rediscovered and now share with you
A screencap from the game Oblivion. A demonic creature emerges from a fiery portal -- the oblivion gate after which the game is named. In the font that is used in the game, the caption in DFW's style:

I have been given, or rather 'had bestowed upon (me)' a test or one might say mission or 'quest' to undertake the 'closing' of certain 'gates'.Another screencap from the game Oblivion. Two lizard-headed characters are talking in a room. The DFW-ish caption reads:

The exact details however escaped me, as I had not slept 'even a single wink' in over three weeks...A close-up of one of the lizard-headed characters, who stares expressionlessly at the camera. The caption takes up half of the screen now. It reads:

and the saurian face of my interlocutor had, due to the concomitant 'hallucinations', begun to melt into a waxy pallid substance that dropped or rather poured itself onto the floor of the tavern or 'alehouse' where I had so recently spent one of my many 'sleepless nights'.
