WELL NOW, would you look at that? A massive, 4-YEAR-LONG study of NEARLY 30 MILLION people in France found that individuals who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine had a 74% LOWER risk of death from severe COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated individuals and ZERO increased risk of all-cause mortality.

I got both of mine on 9/15. I got tired of waiting for our regular pharmacy to get the Covid in, so went to the CVS down the road. They were easy to deal with, somewhat to my surprise.

My women’s group from church (Catholic) started reading Magnifica Humanitas a couple of weeks ago and really like it. I was just commenting to them how many non-Catholic and/or non religious online acquaintances I have who pop up with “I never expected to find myself agreeing with the pope, but…”

88. To Hive and to Hold, Amy Crook. Reread. Slow burn queer romance in a world with magic on top of older technology. Arthur is an apothecarist with a hive of magic bees on his roof. Jade is a magical tattooist. They barter with many neighboring groups for food and needed items. Recommended.

I am too much online, I fear. I did a double take at my church’s announcement: Bring your furry friends to church on Saturday! This is, it turns out, for the traditional blessing of the animals in honor of St. Francis. Not … whatever else I was thinking.

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

My TBR collection is growing but I keep sidestepping into rereads. Just reread Elizabeth Moon’s Paladin’s Legacy series, in anticipation of Horngard in October, but I hear Horngard doesn’t require the others. Now rereading To Hive and to Hold by Amy Crook. Queer romance, magic, cooperative society.

85. What Makes You Come Alive: A Spiritual Walk With Howard Thurman, Lerita Coleman Brown. Very readable. Thurman helped guide the Civil Rights movement. Mysticism and action; both are needed. Encouraged writing a personal “working paper” of what God is calling you to and what practices you follow.

I was an undergrad almost 50 years ago, majoring in computer science. I liked CS classes and learned a lot from them, but the quarter I took all CS, math, and stats nearly broke my brain. Fortunately distribution reqs got me a change of pace and some breadth. Some philosophy, history, anthropology.

Not voting isn't a protest. It is a green light for others to hike your rent, track your data, and shape your neighborhood without you. They don't need your approval; they just need you to stay home. Don't let them win by default. #GetReadyToVote social.demcast.com/s/rdrsW8HS

I saw one recently in Maryland also, in a garden in the DC suburbs. Don’t know if it was native or planted, but it was clearly thriving outdoors. As a Houston native, it seemed odd to see one in the midst of lush greenery. I expected scrub.

78. The Green Man’s Debt, Juliet E McKenna. #9 in the highly enjoyable series. Dan Mackmain, dryad’s son, is going to Ireland with his fiancé. But he’s dreaming, not about a task from the Green Man, but about the Hunter, who he owes for a favor in a previous adventure. Not a simple vacation, then.

77. Fury in Death, J D Robb. New Eve Dallas. Starts with a long and detailed prologue, which I dislike. It’s establishing the killer’s motivation, I get that, but it was too long for my taste. Otherwise, good investigating. On the personal side, Mavis and Peabody have a fabulous housewarming party.

It shows up again and I am not surprised or bored. Maybe the author is crafting it so that repetitions are varations on a theme: same preoccupation, different trigger. I will have to look.

I think I disagree, at least partially I’m reading a series of mm romances that have enough of this to notice but not enough to make me put it down If the viewpoint character has a preoccupation with something from his past or his perceived flaws, it’s not going to get magically fixed.

Understandable. I have most of my ebooks on the Nook app, which is why I checked, and it bugs me when I end up buying something for Kobo or Kindle and then have to remember where to look for it. Hope it gets resolved soon. Especially, as you say, with Horngard coming soon.

I went to high school in the DC area, college in Virginia, and have been living near DC again since 2000, so this tracks. There are apparently still echoes of my youth in Houston and years as a young adult in New Orleans.

US dialect map comparing my responses to the quiz at mydialect.us to regional speech patterns. Mine are most like Washington DC, Baltimore, and Philly, moderately like the rest of the eastern seaboard, and somewhat like the Gulf Coast. Not at all like the Great Plains.

IMO deeply true of some, and slightly true of many … it is a general human failing that we prefer moral guidance that agrees with us. But with US Catholics (where my experience lies) I have a reasonable hope for a steady shift in opinion and practice as the message gets spread and reinforced.
