There are a number of lessons that could be drawn from this - but one is that for all the hand-wringing, a lot of problems around stopping the rise of the far right in the West can (and should) in fact be solved with drone strikes.
Post from Mark Chadbourn:

"Ukraine blows up Russian data centres and immediately and mysteriously online talk about Germany's Far Right AfD virtually disappears.

Stop Putin you stop the Far Right."

Which doesn't make them any less evil, and they absolutely relished being able to indulge in systemic bigotry. But by and large, fascist systems aren't made up of true believers - just awful, power-hungry people.

Ironically, not that far off from actual Nazis, in the sense that they absolutely did have a core group who genuinely worked from racial theories - but then the wider structure, including many higher-ups, was mostly made up of hangers-on who were in it purely for adjacency to power.

Frankly, more like 18 years. Russia's invasion of Georgia in 2008 should have been treated as a five-alarm fire, but between that and Ukraine in 2014, too many warnings were missed.

Zelenskyy: While our teams are meeting in Florida, US President is having conversation with Kremlin leader responsible for this war. I believe they are simply using our team as a cover...clearly not acting in good faith as a partner. And this, in my view, is a weak decision from strong partners.

Screenshot of tweet (sorry) from @byron_queen that says “finally reading House of Leaves” and below is the standard Domino’s delivery pizza box, covered in words and pictures about pizza, a cacophony of visual noise that goes beyond gaudy and teeters on the brink of old timey farmers almanac pizza madness.

It's a smokescreen to try and use (whatever is left of) US power to shield Russia's oil industry. There's no reason Ukraine should take any of it at face value, and they probably won't, but it's absolutely gross and thuggish.

The number going down isn't going to last even a few months if Russia has no diesel to sell, which it doesn't.

100%. This is just a smokescreen trying to shield the Russian oil industry from further Ukrainian attacks. There's no reason Ukraine shouldn't ignore it and double down, especially since the US has little meaningful leverage left against them.

Otohiko @otohiko.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
It's a smokescreen designed to protect Russia's refineries, Trump trying to do what Putin's air defences are failing at. At this point, I see no reason for Ukraine not to double down. It's not like the US has much meaningful leverage left against them.

Otohiko @otohiko.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Oh, I think this is largely a smokescreen - but a smokescreen designed to shield Russia's oil industry from further attacks. Ukraine is absolutely doing great, and should just double down in response. There's not much genuine leverage the US has against them at this point.

Between that and other news today, I am honestly struggling to describe the US, both as a nation and a state, as anything other than evil.

Otohiko @otohiko.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
On the same day, sanctioning the ICC and unsanctioning Russia. The US is just a transparently evil state at this point, and will be so until it stops (or is stopped from) behaving like this.

On the same day, the US has sanctioned the International Criminal Court (directly on the pretext that it may otherwise go after US leaders) and unsanctioned Putin's Russia. At this point, one can only conclude that the US is a transparently evil state, and will be so until it stops (or is stopped).

I hope Zelenskyy orders an immediate escalation against Russian refineries, and states around the Baltic work with Ukraine to assist with interdicting Russian attempts to ship the oil out through there.

It's hard to predict 2. because so much will depend on turnout. Even most UCP voters seem to be for remaining. Looking at polling data, there's only maybe 5/87 ridings that are >75% UCP. Between those, I think there is a small chance one or a couple of might get chipped away, but probably not more.

Otohiko @otohiko.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I think the danger zone is if the separatists are able to chip away a majority in one or more of 87 provincial ridings in Alberta, especially if there is oil or critical mineral infrastructure. It doesn't mean anything legally, but it could be used as a pretext for future provocations by US actors.

Otohiko @otohiko.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Also keep an eye on the Alberta independence referendum in Canada (Oct. 18). While it's guaranteed to fail, it'll be worth watching what the US-right-wing-backed separatists do next. I'm not sure it's exactly a Donbas playbook that they will be running, but something like that is possible.

To be fair, they also stick to those tricks for years after they failed to work as if they did. Ask them about the results of the 2020 election. It's a bizarro world they live in where things that demonstrably don't work at treated as if they do.

Also, Russia's economy is both incomparably weaker and heavily reliant on China's. Outside of nuclear weapons, Russia just doesn't have much that could significantly damage China's ability to fight - even if an initial clash went very badly for China, they would recover very quickly.

I feel like that's also not incidental - my parents had a full-blown tantrum about the pandemic and decided to make their gradual slide into conspiracy theories my problem. I don't really like hearing people tell me that my education made me part of a cult, so no wonder I stopped talking to them.

I want to help build a better world through working on something bigger with networks of people. But I'm yet to be in a network that hasn't been experiencing a major collapse within a few years of me getting into it.

I honestly feel like it's some kind of cruel joke that not only did I get all that but also lived the late Soviet/early post-Soviet experience as a kid. Institutional collapse has never not been the norm around me but I've still somehow stayed enough of an idiot to keep tying myself to institutions.

It's also interesting that anime/manga never really moved on from that. Millennial, Gen Z, and even Gen Alpha authors are still writing recognizably "lost decade" stories three decades later and getting a lot of reaction from audiences most of whom weren't even alive in the 90s.

Being unneccessarily serious for a second: I wonder to what extent this might also be political signaling, i.e. the AK being contextually used as Marxist-Leninist symbology (see: FRELIMO and the flag of Mozambique etc.)

Meanwhile I'll be privately smug that I was more or less spot on in my assessments of where this was going and how much it was going to cost - not just this February, but even last June. Admittedly, for all the reasons you mentioned, none of this was hard to foresee. Shocking that so many didn't.

Using drones to hunt dogs and civilians at bus stops in Kherson doesn't make a whole lot of sense in terms of battlefield effectiveness either, and has little value for technical training, but they're certainly doing it and posting a lot of videos of it online.

There are a lot of incredibly stupid things the Russians do, to the point where I wouldn't rule out this possibly being some sort of ritual hazing of the operators, either (could be putting them in their place by making them knowingly complicit in war crimes, or just desensitized).

To be fair, most drivers also don't have Ford F-150 shaped problems either, but the supply side had been so successful at convincing enough people they do that the prevalence of large trucks on the road became that problem. It seems like they're trying to make something like that happen here.

I recall he was hanging around the Rzeszow airport in Poland and border crossings to Ukraine in 2022, pointing fingers at how the West was "secretly" sending "tanks" to Ukraine, and how NATO was to blame for Russia's invasion. Pretty sure he left because security's patience with him was running out.
