Spiralling out of sync 🫨 This new Hubble image features a galaxy in the Virgo Cluster, NGC 4698, which has been thrown out of sync at some time in its history. Read more 👉 Ehttps://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Images/2026/09/A_galaxy_spinning_out_of_sync 🔭
A spiral galaxy viewed at an angle, with a bright central bulge and winding spiral arms. The arms form a ring around the galaxy, without appearing to reach its centre. Prominent red-brown dust lanes weave through the arms, which are also dotted with bright blue and reddish regions of star formation. The galaxy is set against a dark background scattered with stars and faint distant galaxies. Credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA, D. Thilker, the MAUVE-HST Team

Webb reveals one of its largest images to date! 😲 This starry view shows the nearby star-forming region IC 348. Here, astronomers searched for brown dwarfs, objects which are less massive than the smallest stars. Read more 👉 www.esa.int/Science_Expl... 🔭🧪
A star-forming region. It is blanketed in thick clouds of gas and dust, millions of kilometres across, that form swirling patterns. Bright stars are scattered throughout the clouds, with the densest cluster situated in the centre of the scene. Each is crowned with six long points created by the optics of the telescope’s mirrors. In the upper right, a couple of hidden stars blast out long, glowing jets of material. Credit: ESA/Webb, NASA, CSA, K. Luhman, C. Alves De Oliveira, M. Zamani (ESA/Webb)

The conclusion of a century-long quest 😲 Our VLT obtained firm evidence that Betelgeuse, a red supergiant star in the Orion constellation and one of the most famous stars in the night sky, is not alone! 🔭 🧪 1/4
A collage of various astronomical images. The background image shows a wide view of a starry night sky, with blue lines connecting the stars of the Orion constellation. An inset image zooms into the star Betelgeuse, showing its orange surface. A second inset shows a bright companion next to the star. Image by ESO/M. Montargès et al. Background: N. A cosmic hawk and its starry eyasses 🐦 What looks like a hawk spanning its wings above massive newly born stars is the RCW 36 nebula. Astronomers used the, yes, HAWK-I instrument on the VLT to study the hidden brown dwarfs: www.eso.org/public/images/potw2609a 🔭 🧪

The Trifid Nebula is a favourite of astronomers, and this image shows just why. So named for the dust bands that trisect its glowing heart, the nebula is a rare combination of three nebula types, revealing the fury of freshly formed stars. More: www.eso.org/public/news/eso0930 🔭 📷 ESO

What lurks behind these dense, dusty clouds? 😶‍🌫️ The heart of the neighbouring galaxy Messier 82. M82 is home to brilliant stars whose light is shaded by sculptural clouds, clumps and streaks of dust and gas 👉 esahubble.org/images/potw2... 🔭
A close-in view of the centre of galaxy M82. Bright, bluish light radiating from the centre is due to stars actively forming there. A thick lane of gas, black in the centre and red around the edges, crosses the centre and blocks much of the light. Thinner strands and clumps of reddish dust cover much of the rest of the view.

In this second photo, the sun was obscured by smoke, but the clouds below were receiving sunlight and shining brightly. The sky truly looked strange, and, knowing what's happening around this area (massive fires), the feeling was very unpleasant, distressing.

The skies above Paranal are at risk from a proposed industrial megaproject.  This would be located in the vicinity of ESO's Observatory. If constructed, it would irreparably impact astronomical observations. Read more: www.eso.org/public/news/eso2501 🔭  📷 ESO/P. Horálek

World's darkest and clearest skies at risk from industrial megaproject
On December 24th, AES Andes, a subsidiary of the US power company AES Corporation, submitted a project for a massive industrial complex for environmental impact assessment. This complex threatens the pristine skies above ESO’s Paranal Observatory in Chile’s Atacama Desert, the darkest and clearest of any astronomical observatory in the world [1]. The industrial megaproject is planned to be located just 5 to 11 kilometres from telescopes at Paranal, which would cause irreparable damage to astronomical observations, in particular due to light pollution emitted throughout the project’s operational life. Relocating the complex would save one of Earth's last truly pristine dark skies.

📷 This NASA/ESA #Hubble Space Telescope image shows galaxy LEDA 22057. It features a supernova explosion, visible down and to the right of the galactic nucleus. The 'pale blue dot' of SN 2024PI stands out against the galaxy’s spiral arms. 🔗 esahubble.org/images/potw2... @spacetelescope.bsky.social
A spiral galaxy with two thin, slowly-curving arms, one fainter than the other, coming off the tips of a bright, oval-shaped core region. The disc of the galaxy is also oval-shaped and filled with fuzzy dust under the arms. It has some bright spots where stars are concentrated, especially along the arms. The core has a white glow in the centre and thick bands of gas around it. A supernova is visible as a pale blue dot near the core.
