Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 14hMany many years too late, but important that the record gets set straight. 051
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 05/10/2026That sounds kind of interesting, I hope you do get around to writing it. 120
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 05/10/2026"hospitals? Oh right, those things you knock down to build more roads" - National candidates (probably) 040
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026Awsome. The policies are so good, and they really seem to be getting more cut through now. 020
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026We had imaginary fiscal hole, but what about second imaginary fiscal hole? 130
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026Once again the greens have made the mistake of focusing on light rail to the airport instead of light rail to the fish and chip shop. This place is humming, we clearly need a mass transit solution! 2120
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026Vintage green party sweatshirt but with "Choo Choo Motherfuckers" I would so buy one. 1163
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026"you're entirely right, I was wrong to suggest that people want to be able to afford food and to live their lives, what I should have said that the children yearn for the minds and to lick the jackboot of capitalism" 020
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026So much of the devaluation of expertise, the concentration of power, the rush to break things. That all existed before LLMs but they're being used both deliberately and not to accelerate it. And unleashing them as a addictive chatbot is unforgivably reckless IMHO. 010
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026But there is so much gray in all of it, it's a useful technology, there is absolutely a financial bubble and a lot of grift. It can absolutely amplify things, but it amplifies the good and the bad which is part of why there are such mixed experiences. 100
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026I remain deeply skeptical that it will have such an impact on other fields and I think a lot of that is tech people doing what they've always done and assuming everything is programming. Few fields have the same properties that make this work for software. 110
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026I found this was a really good summary written for non programmers of what's changed and some of the history. I liked that it recognises the two different experiences of programmers and non programmers. gist.github.com/bg50/23bdbf4...gist.github.comThoughts.mdGitHub Gist: instantly share code, notes, and snippets. 100

Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026Even meta at least strips the identifying information from the metadata these days after all the problems 000
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026I'm pretty sure the "simple" copyright response isn't right either, but it's morally wrong that a lot of things out there for public good, and out there under specific terms, are being mined for such a private benefit. I don't know what the answer is though, hence struggling with it. 100
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026Yeah, the concentration is extremely bad, and is part of the reason I'm really hoping the open weights win out. We've seen that time and time again with infra like web servers so I'm hopeful. 100
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026I think a lot of people are struggling deep down with the original sin of it all as well. It's not the same level as "do you use the medical knowledge from the concentration camp experiments" but the anology is there and I think we're struggling to deal with that and the power concentration. 210
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026I use this stuff every day in my job and it's genuinely useful, mainly for the stuff we never quite get to. But I still hate it with the fire of 1000 suns when somone sends me an LLM generated document. My current rule is LLM outputs are fine for computers but not humans. 210
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 04/10/2026I think a lot of tech people shifted position at the beginning of 2026 because it really did become useful in our field. But we're all still grappling with the norms and values that need to emerge quick smart. 110
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 03/10/2026At least for me, when I've dug into this the delay actually hasn't been the redirector but the page being linked to. It seems a lot of browsers display the redirecting page while the new one is loading, presumably because it might be a download or something else that doesn't replace the page. 111
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 03/10/2026National responds to the Greens rail announcement: If elected we promise not just light rail to the airport, but light rail from Cape Reinga to Bluff! Specifically that route. There will be no other stops! We will remove rail everywhere else in the country! 041

Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 03/10/2026I know, and yet it seems to be being used to stir up a bunch of racism by pretending the Māori roll gives people extra votes 010
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 02/10/2026I was just wondering the other day if brothers was still there now it's just a short train from work, seems it is, excellent news. Sounds like an awesome day 110
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 02/10/2026Looking forward to all the "one man one vote, we must abolish the Māori roll because racism, I mean mumble mumble exta votes" people somehow justify why actually landlords should get extra votes. 110
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 02/10/2026Now Nick, would you like to spin again for another $260,000 or would you like to buy a soul? We'll be right back with more WHEEL OF DEMOCRACY after these brief messages from our sponsors. 110
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 02/10/2026When you make a donation over 20K you spin the Wheel of Donation live on TV to decide which party gets it 130

Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 01/10/2026I don't understand this sentence. It seems you are implying that there is too much cheese. But that can't be right. 260

Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 30/09/2026I think at this point if they were worried about people's qualifications, or ability, to do the job then they'd kind of have to abandon all their politicians, luxon isn't exactly qualified either 0120

Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 27/09/2026If its like most of these group you have 0 power as a member for a long long time and they're free to cancel your membership for any reason. There was a lot of digging into the FSU constitution to see if INZ could do the same tactics back and it turns out not so much. 020
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 27/09/2026That fine print about having to remember to cancel does actually matter. "here's $1.50 for time limited access, no more charges unless you decide" and "here's a subscription that will auto renew at $6.50" are not actually the same thing 200
Orthanc @orthanc.nz · 27/09/2026Pretty sure you'll wake up in the morning with Doom running on it having hacked it in your sleep 040
