In the process, I also looked up another Zindel novel with the equally unlikely title Pardon Me, You're Stepping on My Eyeball. As for what *that* one's about... you're just going to have to read the Wikipedia synopsis.

I never read it. Tonight, while doing unrelated research, I learned that it is widely regarded as the first YA novel to treat (not especially sensitively, I gather) the subject of abortion.

Awhile back, during my never-ending quest to find "babysitter in peril" novels at the thrift store, I stumbled upon a withdrawn library hardcover of Paul Zindel's 1969 novel My Darling, My Hamburger - which I bought entirely because the title was so absurd.

Also, even if there *were* machine-made clothes, they would still be *designed* by humans.

Also, Oates' analogy is so off as to be useless. The analogy she's using would apply to books that are produced by printing presses versus books that are hand-bound. Machine-produced clothes (to the extent those even exist) were still *designed* by a person.

Talking to the realtor: "Okay, so our number one, won't compromise criteria is that it has to be located on Witch Hollow."

Genuinely mad that both of these roads exist within about twenty minutes of my house, and I don't live on either of them.

Again, please note that these things I'm avoiding are not inherently bad things. Merely things that I'm not trying to do in my own writing.

... and my work is animated (at least I hope) by a deep humanism, which is at odds with the "death as pratfall" approach of splatter stuff like this.

It's probably honestly a long essay to write, but essentially, while I want my writing to be fun to read, I don't want it to be jokey, or for the fun to undercut the atmosphere...

We showed what I am also pretty sure this is at our local micro-cinema for Halloween one year and it was amazing.

Gotta be able to have some fun with your almost-despair! I honestly think that James's "pleasing terror" is usually more apt.

That said, if you want a summary of what I *would* like my stories to be, "something that feels the way this sounds" would be a decent start.

(This is not a commentary on whether or not Resident Evil is *good*. There are plenty of genuinely great things that still aren't necessarily what I want my stories to be.)

Zach Cregger's new Resident Evil is definitely horror. And it's also pretty undeniably fun - at least one time, in a theater, with a crowd. And yet, it's also just about the antithesis of what I want my stories to be.

A phrase that has frequently been used (sometimes by me) to describe my stories is "fun horror" - and I genuinely do hope that people have fun reading them.

Pimetime (2026) | This version of Moby Dick is weird. Was this bold or hackneyed? Smart, or very much the opposite? I'm genuinely not sure I know. Maybe I never will. But I appreciated my time with it.

The Ghost Camera (1933) | "You wait, I'll show you something rummy." Somewhat inexplicable first-person POV sequence. Plot and particulars that could have been a giallo in a few decades' time. A charmingly verbose lead. Pre-code sexiness. Some clever editing. What more could you ask for?

Black & white illustration of Akane Tendo from the Ranma 1/2 manga by Rumiko Takeshi. She’s wearing a dark top & a short high-waisted skirt with black tights & cute little boots. She’s also got a cool belt & a fanny pack hanging on one hip. The pièce de résistance is her jacket, which is oversized & boxy & has a pattern of huge jack-o-lantern faces which say PUMPKIN beneath them.
